About this deal

The Hailsham Pavilion Cinema & Theatre re-opened to the public via funds raised by the Hailsham Old Pavilion Society (H.O.P.S.) to restore the old cinema. [ citation needed] Kathy is saddened by the situation, so she voluntarily leaves the Cottages to begin her carer training. Several years later, rumors begin to circulate that Hailsham has closed. One day, Kathy encounters an old friend from Hailsham who informs her that Ruth has begun her donations and is doing poorly. Despite their tumultuous relationship when they were young, Kathy volunteers to become Ruth’s carer.

Hailsham is actually one of the oldest places on the south coast - the town was settled long before the Romans landed on the shores of Sussex and Kent in the 1st Century. Fleur de Lys and Inglenook – The "Fleur de Lys" and "Inglenook" in Market Street – one building divided in two in the late 19th century, but now reinstated as one – was originally built in the reign of Elizabeth I (1542) as part of the original hostelry of the town. Later to become the Workhouse, after which it was converted to shops and residential dwellings, it is now the Hailsham Town Council’s offices and meeting room. Part Three explores Kathy’s time as a carer. Kathy becomes a carer for Ruth, who has undergone two donations. They visit an abandoned fishing boat near Tommy’s treatment centre. By this point, Tommy has made three organ donations and is approaching his fourth, which clones generally do not survive. Kathy and Tommy go to visit Madame, who kindly tells them that the deferral program never existed. She explains that Hailsham was a “progressive” school, and that she and the other guardians were actually activists for the humane treatment of clones. The emphasis on artwork was to show the public that the clones had souls. However, the humane-treatment movement has petered out and Hailsham has lost its funding. The story begins with Kathy H., who describes herself as a carer, talking about looking after organ donors. She has been a carer for almost twelve years at the time of narration, and she often reminisces about her time spent at Hailsham, a boarding school in England, where the teachers are known as guardians. The children are watched closely and are often told about the importance of producing art and of being healthy (smoking is considered a taboo, almost on the level of a crime, and working in the vegetable garden is compulsory). The students' art is then displayed in an exhibition, and the best art is chosen by a woman known to the students as Madame, who keeps their work in a gallery. Kathy develops a close friendship with two other students: Ruth and Tommy. Kathy develops a fondness for Tommy by looking after him when he is bullied and having private talks with him. However, Tommy and Ruth form a relationship instead. Look, there are all kinds of things you don’t understand, Tommy, and I can’t tell you about them. Things about Hailsham, about your place in the wider world, all kinds of things. But perhaps one day, you’ll try and find out. They won’t make it easy for you, but if you want to, really want to, you might find out.’ (Miss Lucy to Tommy) Chapter 9 Your Councillors". Wealden District Council. [12] Adaptations [ edit ] Hailsham Active (formerly Hailsham & District Sports Alliance) was set up in 1995 with the objective to unite sports clubs and societies within the Hailsham district, provide support for member clubs, and to promote sport within the town as an essential activity for residents. London is some 48 miles (77km) away.

Tommy has a new theory about deferring their careers as donors: if two Hailsham students were in love, and could prove it through their artwork, they could delay their donations by three or four years. He begins drawing imaginary animals in hope of the deferral theory. Ruth tells Kathy that she knows Kathy is in love with Tommy, but that he will never return her feelings. Part Three Otterson, Joe (2 February 2023). " 'Never Let Me Go' Series Not Moving Forward at FX". Variety . Retrieved 3 February 2023. Hailsham is the home of Wealden District Council. [16] County [ edit ] Most of the characters in Never Let Me Go are clones designed to become "donors"––that is, organ donors. When they reach young adulthood, they are forced to begin a series of organ donations that will eventually kill them. Exchange The name "Hailsham" is thought to come from the Saxon "Haegels Ham", [5] meaning the clearing or settlement of Haegel, Hella or a similar name, possibly even "Aella's Ham", the clearing of Aella the Saxon. The name of the town has been spelt in various ways through the ages from ‘Hamelsham’ (as it was referred to in the Domesday Book), "Aylesham" in the 13th century, and later Haylesham, to its present spelling.

The institution or school called Hailsham was formed by Miss Emily and Madame and offered certain clones a better life than most clones would experience. It is a sign of innocence as the students play together and enjoy their childhood. They focus on art and poetry and have a set of guardians that seem to watch over them to keep them safe. This innocence is something Kathy tries to hold on to throughout the novel. She is forced to hold on to it in her memories after she leaves Hailsham. The arrival at the Cottages signals that the students have left their innocence behind. Later, with the closing and abandonment of Hailsham, the mature and knowledgeable students gain insight into and accept their fate.
