The brand-name version of levetiracetam oral tablets is Keppra. The brand-name version of levetiracetam ER oral tablets is Keppra XR. About 13% of people taking levetiracetam experience adverse neuropsychiatric symptoms, which are usually mild. These include agitation, hostility, apathy, anxiety, emotional lability, and depression. Serious psychiatric adverse side effects that are reversed by drug discontinuation occur in about 1%. These include hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, or psychosis. Keppra must be administered twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, at about the same time each day. Levetiracetam is sometimes used off label to treat status epilepticus.
