About this deal

A ver, voy a ser claro en este punto, ya tocará a los que les encantan las pruebas especificas con medidores de frecuencias o cualquier otra herramienta. The 1AM2 and MV1 couldn’t be more different in the high frequencies. If you like your treble smooth, and you don’t like too much attention being called to it, then the 1AM2 will be more for you. With the MV1, a lot more focus is granted to the highs, and it is considerably more lifted than the 1AM2. There’s more frequency content to articulate, and the MV1 responds well, but not without some sharp edges. When compared to other mixing headphones from the likes of Beyerdynamic, these highs will be easier to digest. However, if you’re treble sensitive, then the 1AM2 will be both more comforting in its highs, as well as accurate. Summary I have also tried it with both recordings in uncompressed 24 bit, 96khz WAV file form and 24 bit 44khz VST instruments (EastWest Hollywood Opus to be specific). The impulse response is displayed as is, without compensation of the frequency response for the microphone or smoothing. It is RAW data. The reduction in the frequency response of the microphone starts at 20 kHz . More present mids and a slightly forward sound characterize the MSR7B. But the mids here also showcase more contrast, giving the impression of grip. As a result, the mids on the MSR7B tend to jump out, with better isolation from the lows and highs.

At 16Ω and 98dB/mW, these are super easy to drive, literally any device can drive them very loud, even ones that output only 5mW. Inside the MDR-1AM2, you will find a 40mm dynamic driver with an aluminum-coated liquid crystal polymer diaphragm. According to Sony, the driver is capable of reproducing sounds from as low as 3Hz to as high as 100,000Hz. To ensure accurate reproduction of high-frequency sounds, the MDR-1AM2 has a special grille modeled using the Fibonacci sequence over the driver. The ear cups and ear pads don’t look all that big, and the ear pads are quite shallow, but they wrap around and fit my ears comfortably. It is witchcraft. It doesn’t feel tight or claustrophobic at all. Snug and plush are the two words that come to mind when I put on the MDR-1AM2. That said, I suspect readers with ears larger than mine might find that they fit more like on-ear headphones than over-ear headphones. The MDR-1AM2’s predecessors were renown for being extremely comfortable and I’m happy to report that the MDR-1AM2 is the same. To begin, the MDR-1AM2 is extremely light, weighing just 187g. The headband is lined with soft synthetic leather and distributes what little weight of the headphone nicely.

Under the hood, the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B utilizes a larger 45 mm driver. In contrast, the MDR-1AM2 sports a smaller driver measuring 40 mm. Both being relatively easy to drive, neither one requires amplification, though the MSR7B would benefit slightly more from some amplification. El diseño a pesar de ser sencillo cuenta con la sensación de que se trata de un producto de calidad, nuevamente lo menciono, es lo esperado en un producto de este precio. While I don't see myself using over-ear headphones for anything else than listenting to music, other people like to be able to use such a headphone for calls as well.

Not sure what to do, I called an expert on headphones, and he mentioned these Sony's. In fact he said these are what he used personally. I just received them, and my search is over! They sound better than all the others I tried, even with the amplifier on the others. No amp needed for Sony's, lightweight to the point I don't notice they are even on my head. Low enough impedance I'm only slightly over half maximum volume on the IPAD. While the balanced cable is nice to have, I see it more of a bonus than anything else as you won't really need it. The lightweight, very soft pads and the fact that cups are oval shaped makes this pair one of the most comfortable I have ever used.

The impulse response is able to show visually only the same or different polarity of the drivers and possible high-frequency resonance. At the end of the day, the resolution is very reasonable and it's something that some listeners might not even have a problem with. But I have to bring this up because of what these headphones could have been for me. Its stellar tuning and detail retrieval can fit the bill for many and having the extra bit of resolution at this price point would have made these an even stronger contender in the mid-fi arena. Listening to the MDR-1AM2, I found that it appears to have a bit of a split personality. At typical or regular listening volumes, the MDR-1AM2 has a rather pleasing signature with strong, punchy bass; present and smooth mids; and a slightly pronounced but still bearable treble. However, at higher volumes, the MDR-1AM2 takes on a considerably harsher sound and becomes shouty and strained. At higher volumes, its upper mids and treble becomes piercing and has an artificial, shimmering quality about it. Take note of this and be sure to try listening to the MDR-1AM2 at various listening levels when auditioning it.

Ears also tend to get hot after listening to it for prolonged periods of time. For the MSRP they ask on it, I really expected a lot more have to be honest. Some non-sound related complaints: Isolation is ok at best, a fair bit of cable noise or microphonics, no hardshell carrying case (assuming for portable use), and no "home-use" cable nor a 6.3mm adapter. So the SONY DAPs which are power limited will be able to drive those nicely without the need to crank it at the maximum setting. Build is pretty utilitarian. The housing is made of plastic, the headband and earcups are made of synthetic leather. Despite the simple choice of materials, they look very well put together. There are a few details that stand out: The hinge that connects the headphone to the headband doesn't squeak when you rotate it. Sony mentioned this in the product literature cuz a lot of users complained about this detail in the 1A. The headband extension mechanism also feels smooth and quiet when you extend/contract it. Very nice attention to detail. Overall, plain but by no means flimsy. The screws are under the thin piece of damping material approximately in the circled location. Lift it up a bit and take the screws out. Just standard Phillips screws. Careful not to accidentally drop the screws into the driver.

Offers

It seems to be very well tuned for its intended market: the average consumer who most likely would want a v-shaped sound. This may be a hard sell with the MDR-1000XM3 going for just a bit more at MSRP if we're talking from a consumer's point of view. If you intend on using these for audio recording, whether music based, film/video production.. these headphones will provide a genuinely pure representation of the entire range of frequencies on offer... IF you have the ear for that kind of thing as well. If you understand what that all means, pre-EQíng and pre-mastering, you will appreciate exactly what these headphones have to offer.
