About this deal

This novel is the fifth volume of a series I didn’t know about and I must say I was curious to discover it. Zach and Kylie, two cops, are going to be put to the test trying to solve two murders: the first one, that of a young woman, a BDSM fan, who was strangled to death, and the second one, that of a man killed during a big charity gala by a bomb. Two different stories, and yet, whose truth will not be easy to find.

The case is particularly important politically because a mayoral election is scheduled for the next week. The current mayor will lose the election if the case isn't solved before then; on the other hand, his opponent will benefit by delaying the capture of the killer. This story follows two of my favourite Patterson characters, Zach and Kylie, who have to solve the murders of four seemingly separate people. There seems to be no obvious links between the victims other than that each of them is wearing a Hazmat suit. However, this case has been amplified due to another potential victim going missing and the town mayor running for re-election. Both of these reasons mean that this case has severe time constraints and consequences if they don't solve the mystery in time. I'm both annoyed and glad that the description of the book tipped its hand so much about the assassins. I prefer to discover that kind of thing in my mystery novels—don't tell me what the characters are going to figure out, let me do it with them. But knowing it was coming did make it easier to buy into. I really need to find or develop a synonymous phrase for that, because I use it too often in this post. Sorry about that. NYPD Red 7: The Murder Sorority” starts off with two murders. First, a sniper marksman takes the life of Warren Hellman, a high profile movie producer, as he leaves the court following his being found not guilty of intentionally killing a well-respected New York detective. Across town, his brother, Curtis Hellman, is found dead on a jogging pathway along 102nd street. Someone left him with his throat slashed.I'm late to the party for this series of books from James Patterson, but that doesn't mean I was disappointed in not having know about them. I just need to keep my eyes open better for future books in the series. But even with their top-notch training, Zach and Kylie aren't prepared for what they see when they're called to a crime scene in the heart of Central Park. They arrive to find a carousel spinning round and round, its painted horses grinning eerily in the early morning dark. There is only one rider: a brutally slaughtered woman, her body tied up and dressed in a Hazmat suit, on display for the world to see.

Overall, this is one of the typical Patterson collaborations where there is too way too many plots and much less less character development. I don’t know whether that is a good thing or bad thing to admit, but I get Patterson’s books from the library because I don’t find him good enough to buy and keep in my library. He’s mind candy – simple, fast-paced, detective and mystery-oriented adventures that can be read in about two to three days and then easily left behind. Nice escapism, but nothing super memorable. It is usually quite difficult to gauge a Patterson novel’s impact until the very end. The stories are good, but the delivery is sometimes a little hokey or lighter when it comes to narrative style. This book did hold my attention throughout, though I did not receive the impactful piece I had hoped to find, after a significant hiatus from the series. That being said, things flowed well and the narrative pushed things along fairly effectively. Patterson’s short chapter signature is on display here, pushing the reader to move forward just to see what awaits them. Marshall Karp surely helped shape this into a decent read, as he has done in the past with this series. Where things are headed next, I have no idea, but I am still interested to see what MacDonald and Jordan have to discover. Meanwhile, in a probably unrelated incident, Kylie's boyfriend is shot. Officially barred from investigating (and she is front-and-center on a case the media and City Hall are focused on), Kylie is mostly watching this from the sidelines—but manages to help the detectives on the case while worried about his recovery. Always the extra and never the star, Gabe Benoit is writing, directing and starring in his own movie - and playing it all out in his head. He and girlfriend Lexi are using Hollywood week in New York city to cause chaos. Using his expertise at being a movie extra Gabe is pulling off a number of murders.I love reading books in this series, and NYPD Red 5 did not disappoint. As always James Patterson and Marshall Karp know how to keep me engaged with their plots. I like James Patterson and Marshall Karp portrayal of their characters and how they interact with each other. NYPD Red 5 is well written and researched by James Patterson and Marshall Karp. I did not expect the conclusion of NYPD Red 5. James Patterson and Marshall Karp did an excellent job in describing the setting of NYPD Red We had our yellow barrel, and we were going to follow it…before it [the movie] ends the shark sinks Quint’s boat and eats him alive, but still, a lead is a lead.” Overall, Karp delivered a tight thriller read that provided a very entertaining escape for two or three evenings. I feel like I should apologise when I give such a high rating to a book like this. This is a book with absolutely no nutritional value. It is the "Olympus Has Fallen" of books.

The Chameleon has lots more in store for deaths this week and has the entire police force working overtime to find, him and stop yet another death before it occurs. Marshall Karp nails the core of a gritty on-the-streets crime thriller that couples authentic police procedural elements with an unremitting pace filled with crafty and ingenious twists and turns…NYPD Red 7: Murder Sorority is one of the most energetic and engaging thrillers of the year and it’s one you can’t miss out on. An indisputable must-read. James Patterson could not have passed down the torch to a more suited author than Karp.” Kashif Hussain, Best Thriller Books In New York City a vigilante serial killer is murdering people who have apparently evaded justice. The killer dresses the victims in Hazmat suits and leavies them in public places, seemingly as a warning to other criminals. It's no mystery why James Patterson is the world's most popular thriller writer . . . Simply put: nobody does it better.' Jeffrey Deaver Truth be told, if I had read this book without knowing Patterson’s named was removed, I wouldn’t have noticed any differences. It felt just like their previous six books in the series. I am not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It just is. I am also not sure what this says about Patterson’s involvement in their writing partnership. It’s weird. Patterson steps away and I can’t tell the difference. I am going to stop talking about this now and let you form your own opinion on the matter.

James Patterson’s NYPD Red books in order:

Mr. Patterson has written a fantastic book. This book is going to be extremely hard to put down once you start reading it. The characters are well-developed; the glimpses into the lifestyles of the uber-rich are intriguing and the obsession expressed toward a celebrity is a well-defined reality. The setting is effective for the telling of the tale; the unfolding narrative takes a fair number of twists and turns before arriving at a surprising revelation that changes everything. This first book in a new series was given to me over Christmas and seemed like a perfect choice to read on a coach trip.

MARSHALL KARP co-created and co-authored the first six books in the #1 bestselling NYPD Red series with James Patterson. Starting with NYPD Red 7, Marshall will become the sole author of the series, which features Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan as members of an elite task force dedicated to solving crimes committed against — and sometimes by — New York City’s rich and famous. A few years ago, I really enjoyed reading James Patterson’s novels, especially the Women’s Murder Club series. Then after 10 or so books, they got a bit repetitive and I mostly stopped reading them. The first NYPD Red came out in 2012 and I loved the concept. A detective series based on the crimes that happened to New York’s rich and famous elite. Now that’s it the fifth novel, I’m getting a bit tired of the series, but it was a perfect pool side read!

NYPD Red 7: The Murder Sorority

Overall, this is another one of the typical Patterson collaborations where there is a lot of fast-paced action where the leads spend most of their time running around following the clues and distractions left by the bad guys. This one had a lot of twists and turns, most of which you could see coming. Patterson even throughs in some minor character development to remind us of Zach is secretly in love with his partner, when Kylie gets sets up with Zach’s girlfriend’s brother. However, I have a feeling that Zach and Kylie are cursed to never connect, or if ever, it will at least be really dragged out… Okay so after NYPD Red 4 came out January of 2016, and after A LONG TIME of no news of a 5th book because of all the open holes, I was STOKED and so excited to read this 5th book last year when it was announced to come out last March. BUT it changed to the end of March this year and I was PISSED of course. But after waiting a year and two months PLUS an additional month in a half of being on the library hold list for this book, I can say it was worth the wait. No one gets this big without amazing natural storytelling talent - which is what Jim has, in spades.' Lee Child
