This is one of the first books I read to myself, and I am as enthralled and enchanted by Mole’s first sight of the river – and his meeting with the Water Rat – today as I was all those years ago. “So – this – is – a – river?” asks the Mole … “The River” the Rat corrects him. “It’s brother and sister to me, and aunts, and company, and food and drink, and (naturally) washing. It’s my world, and I don’t want any other.” Well, why would he? Three Men in a Boat , Jerome K Jerome Fellow marine Ian Buchanan carried Bobby’s broken body onto a medical transport in Fallujah four years ago, only to disappear once they returned to the United States. Marcie’s letters to Ian have remained unanswered ever since.Determined to find Ian, Marcie locates him in the small mountain town of Virgin River. There, she encounters a man who is emotionally wounded, much like Bobby was physically. Undeterred, Marcie refuses to be intimidated. As she enters Ian’s solitary and rugged existence, she uncovers a gentle yet scarred soul beneath his rough exterior. Katie Malone’s journey to Virgin River is disrupted by a flat tire and unfavourable weather. Struggling to change the tyre and with hungry children in tow, Katie is relieved when a group of bikers offers assistance. Among them is Dylan, and there is an immediate spark of attraction between them. But Katie, a practical single mother, and Dylan, a commitment-phobe, are not seeking long-term romance. The book has a superb balance between text and image, a testament to Chapman’s writing and Lan’s exceptional artistic skill. It presents geographical facts and a vivid story unfolding across every continent, showcasing rivers in all their glory. Chapman’s keen sense of adventure and passion for exploration are evident throughout the book. His detailed yet accessible narration of the journey of a river is expertly supplemented with an ecologist’s viewpoint, thanks to the contributions of river ecologist François Edwards. This combination of adventure, exploration, and factual accuracy will ignite curiosity in students about the natural world and engage pupils in geography, ecology, and history. Vanessa Rutledge, supported by the Virgin River community during her darkest days, now seeks a promising future. Despite their reservations, the connection between Katie and Dylan is undeniable. In a single moment, they both sense the potential for something life-changing. As they navigate their own fears and hesitations, they discover that love has a way of defying expectations.
