West) In memoriam. Near this place lie interred the remains of Thomas Sproat, eldest son of Thomas Sproat at Brighouse, having passed many years as a colonist in the parish of Ballarine, near Geelong, Australia, he returned to his native country in the year 1855, and died at Moffat, on the 30th day of January 1859, aged 60 years. A week later, the police arrested Mrs de Melker and charged her with the murder of all three men. Public interest in the De Melker case grew, and the newspapers gave the story a great deal of coverage. The Turffontein chemist from whom she had bought the arson that killed her son, recognized De Melker from a newspaper photograph as being Mrs D.L. Sproat, who had signed the poisons register, and went to the police. In this final piece, whilst a man is considering his own suicide, he falls asleep and dreams that he has killed himself and travelled to another planet where people live in harmony and remain undefiled by evil. However, over time, his own presence defiles these people and he believes he can only redeem them by offering himself as a sacrifice for their sin. Yet he is met with hostility and is treated as a madman. The man is only reconciled by believing that humanity is not fundamentally evil, but has only fallen from grace. It is a story of its time, in that it reflects much of the Orthodox Church’s effect upon the Russian nation. He concludes by compassionately imploring his onlookers to love one another, even as we should love ourselves.Erected by William Patterson, London, in memory of his father Thomas Patterson, who died at (illegible font) 22nd Oct. 1821, aged 66 years. And his brother David, who died 12th Feb 1805, aged 12 years. Also in affectionate remembrance of his mother, Elizabeth Brown, who died 11th Feb’y 1827, aged 69 years. Also the said William Patterson, who died at London, 9th Nov 1831, aged 49 years. In 1932 Daisy de Melker gained a bizarre kind of status when she became the second woman to be hanged in South Africa and, still to this day, young children are threatened into good behavior by the mere mention of her name. The first known Scottish immigrant, Robert Sproat, sailed to America on the Mayflower in 1620. Scots started coming to the United States in significant numbers in the late 1700s, when political upheavals and social changes at home displaced many Scots and sent them searching for a better home. Presbyterian Scots sought religious freedom in the colonies, and families who lost their land when the clan system collapsed hoped to start over somewhere new. Each of the plays contained an astonishing range of characters. In Berkoff’s Master of Cafe Society, it’s the frustrated out-of-work actor munching and slurping his way through a ritualistic breakfast till one can smell the bacon and feel the clawing of greasy pan bread on the palate; the Neanderthal father, with his fag-soaked voice and inarticulate philistinism; the down-trodden, ever-so-proud-of-her-son mother; and a hideous parade of sleazy agents and actresses. George Dillon performs this trio of adapted short stories with electrifying verbal and physical precision. Harry is a typical Steven Berkoff loser, and the first monologue Master of Cafe (in its stage premiere) is the story of his breakfast. The nameless narrator of Robert Sproat’s Stunning the Punters is an ex-skinhead recalling a racist graffiti spree. In Dostoevsky’s Dream of a Ridiculous Man we hear of a dream-world of innocence and caring, and the brand this leaves upon a suicidal wretch. Dillon’s experience with Berkoff material is brought to bear on the other two pieces without smothering their own respective tones; the Dostoevsky piece is an emotional tour de force. Stunning the Punters is a breathtakingly arrogant name to give to a show; it is also entirely accurate. Ian Shuttleworth, THE INDEPENDENT, 20 August 1990

You have been found guilty of the murder of your son, Rhodes Cecil Cowle. Do you have anything to say before I pass sentence of death on you?” A hushed silence fell over the court.Daisy de Melker was a trained nurse who poisoned two husbands with strychnine for their life insurance while living in Germiston in the central Transvaal (now Gauteng), and then poisoned her only son with arsenic for reasons which are still unclear. She is historically the second woman to have been hanged in South Africa. In loving memory of Alexander Hamilton, who died at Balmangan, Borgue, 9th January 1901, aged 49 years. Lured by promises of money, land, and freedom, many Scots joined the American revolutionary army to fight against the British. This so alarmed the British that they outlawed emigration to North America during the Revolution. After the U.S. won its independence, Scottish immigrants continued to make up a significant portion of immigration in North America.

In loving memory of Lt. Colonel Alexander Blair, 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers, (Watson's Horse), Indian Armoured Corps, born 22nd November 1911, died 19th February 1959.

In March 1909, about eighteen months after Fuller's death, Daisy married William Alfred Cowle, a plumber in Johannesburg. She was 22 and he was 36. The couple had five children, four of whom died. The first two were twins who died in infancy; their third child died of an abscess on the liver; and the fourth suffered convulsions and bowel trouble and died at fifteen months old. Their last, and only surviving child, Rhodes Cecil, was born in June 1911. Interesting, brief US Immigration History for kids and children, schools, homework projects on Scottish Immigration to America Each monologue draws a sensitive and involving portrait of a character at odds with society. Steven Berkoff’s Master of Cafe Society avoids the cliched send-up of the ‘resting’ actor and opts for a sad and touching study of the meaninglessness of unemployment. Robert Sproat’s Stunning the Punters dares to look at society’s complicity with racism, while Dostoevsky’s The Dream of a Ridiculous Man– Dillon’s tour de force – is a passionate humanitarian treatise.
