About this deal

Sherry [ edit ] Sherry barrel made with glass barrel head to show the layer of flor floating on top of the aging wine. Oil has not been shipped in barrels [27] since the introduction of oil tankers, but the 42 US gallon size is still used as a unit of measurement for pricing and tax and regulatory codes. Each barrel is refined into about 20 US gallons (17impgal; 76L) of gasoline, [28] the rest becoming other products such as jet fuel and heating oil, using fractional distillation. [29] Barrel shape, construction and parts [ edit ] Wine barrel parts The Roman historian Pliny the Elder reports that cooperage in Europe originated with the Gauls in Alpine villages where they stored their beverages in wooden casks bound with hoops. [10] Pliny identified three different types of coopers: ordinary coopers, wine coopers and coopers who made large casks. [11] Large casks contain more and bigger staves and are correspondingly more difficulty to assemble. Roman coopers tended to be independent tradesmen, passing their skills on to their sons. The Greek geographer Strabo records that wooden pithoi (barrels) were lined with pitch to stop leakage and preserve the wine. [12] Rum is made from molasses or sugarcane juice, water, and yeast. Sometimes coloring and sugar or other flavoring is added to the spirit before bottling. This is a special sip of whiskey. This expression of Tullamore D.E.W. marries the mastery of Irish whiskey distilling with Caribbean rum aging. The triple-distilled Irish triple juice (pot still, grain, and malt whiskey is used) is aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels, blended, and then finished in Caribbean rum barrels that held extra old Demerara rum from Guyana.

Wooden casks were also used to store mineral oil. The standard size barrel of crude oil or other petroleum product (abbreviated bbl) is 42 US gallons (35.0 impgal; 159.0 L). This measurement originated in the early Pennsylvania oil fields, and permitted both British and American merchants to refer to the same unit, based on the old English wine measure, the tierce. Finishing whisk(e)y in a second barrel is a great way for a distiller or blender to put a unique stamp on their juice. It’s a move that’s becoming more and more prevalent too, with sherry, port, beer, rum, and even coffee casks/ barrels all getting play. Each of these iterations and expressions brings something unique to the final product, but today we’re focusing on whiskeys that are finished with rum barrels.

Review:

Lots of tropical mango and banana alongside buttery caramel, brown sugar and rum spice are found in this delight from Ireland’s Tullamore D.E.W. The team took its original blend of pot still, malt and grain Irish whiskeys and finished it in first-fill casks which previously held Demerara rum. A barrel is one of several units of volume, with dry barrels, fluid barrels (UK beer barrel, US beer barrel), oil barrel, etc. The volume of some barrel units is double others, with various volumes in the range of about 100–200 litres (22–44impgal; 26–53USgal). Uses today [ edit ] Beverage maturing [ edit ] Wine barrels in Napa Valley, California, USA This Mercier oak barrel with a capacity of 200,000 Champagne bottles was created for the 1889 world exposition in Paris. Opened Japanese Sake barrel for move. International laws require any whisky bearing the label " Scotch" to be distilled and matured in Scotland for a minimum of three years and one day in oak casks. [17] The opening at the center of a barrel is called a bung hole and the stopper used to seal it is a bung. The latter is generally made of white silicone.

Charred pineapple and honeyed sweetness harmonise with the silky whiskey as two spirits collide in magnificent fashion from this collaboration between Ireland’s Teeling Distillery and Plantation Rum ! Teeling took its Small Batch blended Irish whiskey, initially matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Central American rum casks, and treated it to a further 12-month maturation in casks that previously contained the mouthwatering Plantation Pineapple Stiggins’ Fancy rum. Angel’s Envy took its time when they decided which rum barrels to use with their signature rye. They tasted over 100 rums to land on the exact Caribbean rum they wanted to age their spicy juice in. The rye is aged according to standard rye rules for the U.S. and then is filled into those rum barrels for an additional 18 months of mellowing.
