Shuttering oil (also called Formwork oil) is a high-quality mineral oil that applies to the inner surface of formwork before concreting. It is also known as form or mould release agent.

It involves the use of a high-quality release agent that is applied to a framework to ensure that the concrete is effectively removed. This process allows easy and painless removal of a framework, preventing damage to both the framework and mould. This does not require any sort of dilution and hence can use instantly. An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally not mixable. For steel formwork, the form release agent should not only be free from water but must also contain rust inhibitors.Contractors have tendency to use burnt oil which is available cheaper in the market which works as a form release agent. For instance, in case of wooden formworks- straight refined, pale, paraffin-based mineral oil and oil phase emulsion can be successfully used. It is important to keep into consideration that the oil must be able to penetrate into wooden structure up to some extent, while also leaving a slightly greasy finish at the surface.
