A Gold winner was found in the next flight, India, for Indri Dru Single Malt Indian Whisky. One judge found it to be on “the sweet side, with a good spicy chilli heat, nutmeg, Sichuan pepper, and cinnamon”. Think about the phrase “single malt whisky” for a few seconds. What images does it conjure in your mind? We’re willing to bet the first (and likely only) images you see in your mind’s eye are those of Scotch whisky, right? This would be due to both the prowess of Scottish-made whisky as well as its advertising. But just because single malt whisky is big in Scotland doesn’t mean that’s the only place it’s produced. In fact, search around long enough and you’ll realise some of the best single-malt whiskies come from some quite unexpected lands. Best Single Malts Not From Scotland: By Country Ahhh, the alure of the single barrel release. I’ll admit to anyone who asks that I’ve never been the biggest supporter of Starward, but I cannot elucidate exactly why. Finish: Short to medium length finish that continues being very dry and tannic. It finishes on a note of red Pez candy and grape. The dry, winey forward finish makes you wonder if you have just taken a sip of wine rather than whisky. Whilst Martin Luther didn’t invent the printing press, he did use Gutenburg’s gift to the world to great effect. The second Master winner, Nestville Whisky Single Barrel from Slovakia, was lauded for its “strong bold malt flavours, with a lovely hint of spice and fruit at the end” by Greifer. Neotia added: “Toffee apple with cinnamon, clove and dark chocolate dusting. Round, sweet, and smooth.” For us, it’s all about the flavour. As we fill our barrels at a lower alcohol proof than other single malts, our whisky takes in all the red wine fruit characters and tannins. Whisky is booming globally, too. Twelve Golds and one Silver were dished out, all to Taiwan’s Kavalan Distillery. Among the Gold medallists were Kavalan Podium Single Malt Whisky with its “tropical fruit-led nose” and “toffee sweetness”, Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky, described as “woody and earthy on the nose, with plenty of charred oak, bitter chocolate and orange”, and Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, which impressed with its “vanilla and toffee aromas, milk chocolate, espresso and caramelised bananas”. Three Golds were awarded in the European rye whisky flight, including two for Denmark’s Stauning and one for Stork Club Full Proof Rye Whiskey. Stauning Rye Maple Syrup Cask Finish was praised for its “classic rye spiciness” and “lingering sweetness” and Stauning Dirty Bastard was praised for its higher ABV, “oak spice and caramel sweetness”. Stork Club Full Proof Rye Whiskey from Germany’s Spreewood Distillers had a “lovely milk chocolate note on the palate” and “nice dried fruits, raisins and apricot”.
