To heat the electrode up, you can use a propane torch or just grind it against a piece of metal. Once the electrode is red hot, you just need to dip the heated end to the powder. By dipping it in and out of the chemical, the end of the electrode will begin to taper. You can get a long taper by dipping a longer tip of the electrode. The length that you dip will taper. You can get a cheap grinder at a tool shop like Harbor Freight or Northern Tool. These aren’t heavy-duty tools to last a lifetime, but how much time do you spend grinding electrodes? A cheap grinder is one easy solution. An angle grinder should only be used when you don’t have any other choices. If you are welding at someone else’s shop and don’t have access to your usual tools, an angle grinder will put a tip on the electrode.
