About this deal

I was slightly surprised to find out that the Vango Ringstead only has 3000mm of hydrostatic head waterproofing. As I say, there was no sign of any leaking, and so either Vango are underplaying it or other manufacturers are over-exaggerating their numbers (more likely). I counted 3 air vents in total in the tent which allowed great air flow, and there was no condensation build-up even when the weather was humid.

There aren’t any of the inner tension bands that you can find on a Vango or a Lichfield for example, but the corner stakes are made of aluminimum to ensure that the tent stays on the ground in heavy winds. I am not aware of any official wind testing, but users reportedly survived winds up to 45 mph inside the Berghaus Air 6 XL (but bear in mind there are plenty of factors that affect the stability of a tent in high winds.) If I had to recommend an alternative to the Berghaus Air 6XL, one that has great living space, decent size bedrooms and good specs on the fabrics used, I’d recommend the Kampa Croyde 6 Air Tent (2019 model) or the very similar Kampa Dometic Croyde 6 (2020 model). Where to buy the Berghaus Air 6XL? We’ve found over the years that if a tent is marketed for a maximum of three people, then the third person has to be on the very small side. It’s therefore typically worth adding ‘+1’ to the number of people you’re looking to accommodate. E.g. if you’re a family of three, we recommend looking for at least a four-person tent. In practice though, bigger is often better and I would not rule out a 6-person tent for a family of four, especially if you have a large car. There are five airbeams in total which take a fair bit of pumping because of the height of the overall structure. There’s a lot of air in them there beams! Clear windows which you can actually see a nice view through – it’s unbelievable that some tent manufacturers scrimp on the windows. Surely it’s one of the main enjoyments of camping!

A good rule of thumb is to go for a tent that's claimed to sleep one more person than you need. If you're a family of four, for example, we'd recommend going for a five-person tent. The total ‘footprint area’ of the two competing tents are about the same, which makes choosing between them difficult. You need to ask yourself – do you prefer girth or length? Actually, it’s probably best not to answer that…. Not all tents have indoor communal spaces that can house all the campers if the weather turns, and even those that do aren't always large enough for everyone to be comfortable.

There are a few design points that it’s worth being aware of before you buy the Portal Alfa. The height is limited to 190cm (about 6ft2) in the front and 180cm (about 5ft 11) in the bedroom. This means that if you’re taller than this then you will be stooping a little inside. Not necessarily a massive issue, but worth pointing out. Secondly, the side windows in the lounge area are quite high up and not that large. Consequently, it can feel a little dark inside if the sun isn’t shining outside. The front windows are fine, but can be a little creased. However, for the price you are paying this is definitely not a bad compromise. The Berghaus Air 6 XL provides excellent value for money. It’s a large tent with large bedrooms and a large living area, ideal for families up to 6. Thanks to its tunnel design, inflatable beams and above average decent pegs it can withstand the poorest weather without a drop of water seeping in, while the huge internal space allows for spending time inside without killing each other.

Prime examples are the Ridgewood and the Greenburgh 7A inflatable tents, which share a 3+3+1 layout. a flexible doorstep that can be dropped to ground level for ease of access. This helps stop water getting inThe Berghaus Air 600 can be pumped or deflated in a matter of a few minutes and is far more convenient than a conventional tent that uses heavy and bulky poles. A pre-attached bedroom speeds up the pitching of the tent as does the double efficiency pump that is supplied. The Berghaus Air 600 is a tunnel tent and is comfortable to live in with it's full head height in both bedrooms and living areas. The air beams are sturdy and are made from TPU to ensure they provide lots of strength when it is windy.
