Miyazaki went to Wales for location hunting, and learned that the town had had a huge labor dispute the year before. Floating Continent: Laputa, the titular Castle in the Sky, is shown in the opening sequence to be the last of an entire civilization built on floating islands. Magical Incantation: The "spells" Sheeta uses are commands that activate her Aetherium pendant's mysterious powers. Super-Powered Robot Meter Maids: One of the active robots in Laputa is a gardener and guardian of the wildlife, but like all of the other Laputian robots it appears to be armed with weapons of mass destruction. Nature-Loving Robot: The robotic guardians of Laputa are Fantastic Nukes, but when left to their own devices, they care for small animals, guard innocent birds' nests, and tend to the nature overgrowing the floating city. Later in the movie, the robots falling from a destroyed Laputa are seen to fall apart in midair, although it is unclear about what exactly caused them to break apart.

Napier proposes that Miyazaki's insistence on showing the freedom of children in Laputa can be credited to the influence of Panda and the Magic Serpent (1958). Laputa was once the heart of a very advanced civilization which utilized the power of a giant crystal of the element Aetherium ("Volucite" in the original Japanese and Streamline English dub) located within the island. In addition to making the entire island float, the crystal gave the Laputians the technology to create sophisticated robots and weapons. However, eventually the Laputians chose to leave the island; Sheeta speculates they came to realize the importance of maintaining their connection to the Earth below.

Never Trust a Trailer: A minor example: One of the trailers for the 2003 dub included a brief scene that looked like Pazu and Sheeta in a hanglider, flying towards Laputa. This scene is from the end of the film, and in actuality they're flying away from it. The arrival on the floating island is nowhere near as smooth.
