Life is not static; it's in constant movement, much like the waves of the ocean. Each wave that comes brings with it new experiences, and each one is different. Just as the bad waves can sometimes show no mercy, the good ones come along and refresh us. Nothing lasts forever. Once you have cirrhosis, your liver won’t get better. But it won’t necessarily get worse. If you still have compensated cirrhosis with little to no symptoms or side effects, you may continue that way for some time. If you can stop or minimize the inflammation causing cirrhosis, it may not progress to the decompensated stage. But you'll have to continue to protect your liver for the rest of your life. In decompensated cirrhosis, the liver is not able to perform all its functions adequately. People with decompensated liver disease or cirrhosis often have serious symptoms and complications such as portal hypertension, bleeding varices, ascites and hepatic encephalopathy. Even if you have been a heavy drinker for many years, reducing or stopping your alcohol intake will have important short-term and long-term benefits for your liver and overall health. But NAFLD has been diagnosed in people without any of these risk factors, including young children. If you find yourself becoming depressed, talk this over with your doctor who can discuss ways of overcoming this. If appropriate, certain medications can be helpful in helping you cope. Remember that liver function can improve if you take care of yourself and receive early treatment. However, you must ensure that health professionals know you have cirrhosis before giving or prescribing any treatment or medication for you. Cirrhosis involves permanent scarring in your liver, which can’t be undone. While your liver has great healing powers in general, cirrhosis is a stage of disease where it doesn’t have enough healthy cells left to heal itself with. But you may be able to slow or stop cirrhosis from progressing further. This depends on what’s causing it, how treatable the cause is, and how well you respond to the treatment. Carrying extra bodyweight can cause liver damage too. And if you are underweight it could be a sign that you are malnourished. If you need to lose or gain weight ask your doctor for advice on diet tailored to you. We all live through experiences that leave scars. However, there is always someone to give us a hand during those difficult times. The important thing is to accept that help. Music can transport us to a different space and connect us to something outside ourselves. It has served this purpose for millennia. There’s a general assumption that if you have later stage alcohol-related liver disease you can’t have a liver transplant, but this isn’t true. Things have changed, which means you can be eligible if it’s the right treatment for you. To be eligible you must have stopped drinking completely. Your liver specialist will try to treat your liver disease for a couple of months before considering referring you to a transplant specialist.

If you’re dependent on alcohol, you can experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop drinking, so your doctor might recommend cutting down your alcohol intake slowly rather than stopping straight away. Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink can still lead to a significant improvement in your condition. There are 2 main treatments to increase platelet levels before surgery – platelet transfusion or medicines. Most people will be offered a platelet transfusion. Early-stage NAFLD does not usually cause any harm, but it can lead to serious liver damage, including cirrhosis, if it gets worse. Many people are only diagnosed with alcohol-related liver disease after going to A&E with symptoms of serious liver disease or liver failure. At this stage, it’s unlikely that your liver disease can be fully reversed. But there is still a lot that can be done to stop your condition getting worse and even repair some of the damage. Cirrhosis is scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by long-term liver damage. The scar tissue prevents the liver working properly. But the longer I put it off, the more clearly I could see how to repair those mistakes and make better choices going forward. Those goals gave me a purpose, something to work toward, and noticing my own growth gave me even more strength to keep going.
