I hadn’t really heard about Lana Del Rey until a friend in the UK recommended this album to me. This was at the exact same time that another friend recommended “The Scarred People” by Tiamat that happens to include a cover of Lana’s “Born To Die” and, for a while, I didn’t know which version was the original!

Anyway, my first impression upon hearing Lana’s sensuous yet cynical crooning was that she was yet another retro-modern songstress along the lines of Amy Winehouse and Duffy. However, the lush yet minimalist arrangements really make Lana’s vocal shine. There’s something about the contrast of her voice against the bittersweet lyrics that really kept me listening.
