About this deal

For me, there is a clear improvement. The author has always superb stories in mind and this novel doesn't disappoint in any way. The characters are more formed now and the reader can relate to their respective evolution more. For me, I really enjoyed reading how the characters developed and grew, especially with how their own relationships with other characters within the story and universe developed. I’ve been branching out into reading different genres this year and was definitely excited to give this a read, but unfortunately, I just dont think the WW2 crime/thriller genre is for me.

Simon has also co-written with T. J. Andrews three bestselling novels set in the Roman era, ARENA, INVADER, and PIRATA. Writing with Lee Francis, Simon is the author of the contemporary thriller PLAYING WITH DEATH Awards of Simon Scarrow However, there were moments of dialogue that took me out of the plot, either unnecessary filler or to make grandiose statements about the themes of the novel - was it cowardice not to fight oppression? Is murder ever justified? How do morals and obligation intersect in such a twisted society? The novel did a good enough job of exploring these question without explicit comments by characters.

Berlin, 1940. After Germany's invasion of Poland, many still hope that a peace can be agreed before the mayhem of all out war begins in earnest. The shortages are already being felt, as resources are diverted to the war effort, and the brutal, endless winter is starting to hit hard. This book has as subject another horrific Nazi massacre at its heart. The killing of handicapped children and sadly this has happened in an organized way by the very thorough Nazi way, because they were a danger for Aryan purity. Sh&t like this happened and there are still people denying the holocaust and it’s kind, which is amazing and absolutely stupefyingly how there can be such a denial. Then again the killing of Muslim men and systematically raping of Muslim girls was ignored in the civil war of former Yugoslavia. A dreadful crash has left him with injuries making him unsuitable for military service and a victim to dreadful replay nightmares. But the independent-minded Schenke, who has dropped the ‘Von’ symbol of rank from his name, has made a successful career in the Kriminalpolizei, the investigative arm of the German police force. What at first seems to be a routine investigation into forgeries of food coupons, becomes suddenly a nightmare from hell when Horst Schenke gets a phone call from SS Oberführer Müller, and a summons to show up asap at the office of Müller, where Schenke will be informed to lead an investigation into the death of former actress Gerda Korzeny (Schnee).

If you like thrillers and Police Procedurals set during WW2, then Dead Of Night is definitely for you, the research Simon Scarrow puts into his work makes for such a visceral and realistic read, and it’s refreshing to have a different point of view with a Police Inspector who is German. One of the protagonists Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived as the new young recruit in the Second Legion, which is considered as the toughest Roman Army. Initially, he finds it difficult to adjust to the rigorous military life and he also has to face the disgust from his colleagues as he gets appointed at a higher rank because of his connection with the Imperial Palace. Simon Scarrow is a British author of historical fictional novels. He was born on October 03, 1962. Simon’s novels have been published in the USA and translation all around the world. Simon Scarrow is a Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author. In this tale, we are still in the early days of WWII, in the strange period before all out conflict got underway, despite the declaration of war on Germany in September 1939. Hitler's plan to 'purify' the German nation, by disposing of 'defective' humans through secret programmes of euthanasia, lies at the heart of the story. This is Simon Scarrow's second book featuring Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke in Berlin shortly after the Nazi invasion of Poland.Kripo Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke, after being threatened to leave the case alone, suicide by the official Nazi channel, but after a plea by a mother who's convinced that her girl has been murdered, Schenke decides to investigate this case with the help of Sergeant Hauser and a former SS man called, Liebwitz, and eventually they will unearth more atrocious cases of murdered children, and all because of the children's disabilities mentally or physically. They are first described as taking part in the battle in Germania and against the invasion of the Britishers by Claudius. In the later of the series, the two soldiers are described as serving in the Imperial Navy in the east of Italy. Y ahí se produce el asesinato de una ex-amante de Goelbels y ahí es donde hacen entrar en la investigación al inspector Schenke y su equipo.

The story begins 28th January 1940 as Dr Manfred Schmesler and his wife Brigitte along with friends Hans Eberman and his wife Eva have just attended a concert. They had arranged to go again the following Friday. Unfortunately that night whilst doing some paperwork Dr Schmesler committed suicide, or did he? His wife believes he was murdered. His passion for writing began at an early age. He spent most of his childhood traveling the world. Before becoming a full-time writer, he pursued his great love of history as a teacher firstly atEast Norfolk Sixth Form College, then atCity College Norwich. Schenke is under pressure to find the murderer and is hindered every step of the way by Müller and the constricts of the ruling party. This is an interesting and well researched read. Despite their service to an evil regime, Schenke and Sergeant Hauser come across as people with an innate sense of decency, trying to do their best in a difficult situation. They are pursuing justice which is impossible in a dictatorship which is in itself unjust. Although Schenke is not a member of the Nazi party, many of his Kripo colleagues are and "Gestapo" Müller takes the opportunity to place one of his agents alongside Schenke's squad. It enforces the belief that the Kripo officers are "ultimately the servants of the (Nazi) party, rather than the guardians of law & justice." Schenke realises that the law "had become whatever the party said it was and justice was irrelevant".The author has managed to create a story that has a harrowing reality to it and he has dealt with the subject sensitively whilst also highlighting the abhorrent practices of the Nazi party in their quest for the perfect race. The two seemingly separate investigations are brought together seamlessly and along with Schenke you can’t help but feel for the men who have taken matters into their own hands to bring the guilty to justice even when you know that it will not end well for them either. There’s a reason Schenke has been selected – he’s not a member of the Nazi Party and is only tolerated for his glamorous past racing cars, an illustrious career that ended in a crash. If this case should uncover demons, then Schenke will make the perfect scapegoat. Then, as the nights draw even darker, another woman is murdered and the pressure on Schenke mounts. PLAYING WITH DEATH Extras: Although the subject matter is difficult, at times a break is needed to think about the real atrocities this story portrays. The diligence of the investigation team, against all odds, carries through to the end and this is a terrific historical fiction book. Hopefully, there will be many books in this series.
