It made me think of K.I. Hope, and how the anger of her writing -- that wonderful, necessary, emotional, ethical rage -- would cringe at the other bulls, Ferdinand's friends and family, showing off in the hopes of travelling to Madrid to be slaughtered in the bullfights. I thought of what a true friend she is and how unlikely it is to find a genuine friend on something like this social media platform, and how I have found so many. Tried for treason and murder, eight were found guilty (one remianing conspirator escaped to Serbia before the trial) and three of the men were executed. Princip and Cabrinovic were too young to face death under Austro-Hungarian law and received the maximum term possible of 20 years imprisonment.

A 3D feature-length computer-animated film remake, titled Ferdinand, was released in 2017. It was directed by Carlos Saldanha and produced by 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios. I have since read that "The Story of Ferdinand" was a cast off Munro Leaf wrote in half an hour to give his friend Lawson a story to illustrate. Regardless of how much or how little thought Munro Leaf put into the story it is true that children like myself have enjoyed the story and empathized with the Bull Ferdinand for decades. The story was narrated by former professional boxing champion Juan Nazario with music composed, arranged and conducted by Arthur Rubenstein. [29] A philosophical reader will certainly draw political themes out from this story – but many will argue that its true longevity has nothing to do with the possible metaphors within it. A young audience isn't drawn to The Story of Ferdinand because of its political parallels. They like the book because Ferdinand is an easy character to empathise with.

Children, especially males, often grow up socialized to believe that they should be tough. Amidst a cohort of young bulls who like to fight each other, Ferdinand is the lone, sensitive bull who prefers to sit and smell the flowers. At first, when Ferdinand’s mother sees all the other young bulls playing and sees Ferdinand behaving differently, she worries that he is lonely. But when she understands that he is happy, she relaxes. Ferdinand’s mother ultimately decides that it is fine for Ferdinand to be different, but her initial concerns reflect the underlying ethical question of whether it is beneficial for a person to conform to norms. Some argue that norms originate outside the self and thus should not govern how the individual behaves, while others maintain that norms serve an important role in regulating our behavior to best serve the interests of society. I love Ferdinand the Bull because Ferdinand didn’t look like the rest of the animals and therefore had to think highly of himself to sort of get on in life. I still think of that book, and every time I mention it somebody sends me another copy of Ferdinand the Bull. I give them away. One can only keep so many copies of the same children’s book, but that was a book that inspired me as a very young child. I know it isn’t probably the answer that one is expecting to say, “Oh no, it was the first time I read Much Ado About Nothing of Shakespeare,” or something. Jumpstart's Read for the Record asked Americans to support early education opportunities for all children by reading the official campaign book, The Story of Ferdinand, together on September 20, 2007 to break the record for the largest shared reading experience ever, which was set by 150,000 people on August 24, 2006, during the inaugural year of Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign.
