tshults @tferriss re:1k free. take your time, long slow strokes, and keep your breathing relaxed. don’t switch to another stroke. stay in the free. about 4 hours ago As hoped, I saw an even bigger improvement once I got onto the drills themselves. At the time of writing I'm barely halfway through these but the difference has already been huge, so I'm looking forward to seeing just how much more I improve once I've mastered the remaining drills and combine everything together into the full stroke. When you’re “swimming downhill,” you should feel weightless and relaxed in the water, allowing you to swim faster and for longer distances with less effort. Press your “buoy” Personally, I would really recommend this method if you are an adult beginner as the fastest way to learn to swim as an adult.

jraines @tferriss — breathing to both sides is (slightly) overrated. If your stroke is already decent, a little gallop can help you get in the zone about 11 hours ago Last semester, Kevan (my carpool buddy) and I began going in early to use the gym. They have a wading pool with six lanes and a full length swim pool with eight lanes. After spending a few mornings running on one of the dozens of machines, my knees reminded me how much they detest it so I began spending more time in the pool.A thoughtfully choreographed series of skill drills—practiced in the mindful spirit of yoga—that can help anyone swim more enjoyably

This technique can be used by anyone, from beginners to experienced swimmers, and is designed to help you swim faster, farther, and with less effort. Although triathletes are often type-A individuals who find themselves getting into the minutiae of every aspect of the sport, Total Immersion’s simplified approach helps diminish any over-thinking by reinforcing easy-to-adapt habits that help cultivate an efficient swim technique. In short, TI swimming encourages athletes to slow down and focus on improving their technique. It does not seem like this style of swimming is compatible with waves, given that you have little room to breathe with your head being fully submerged. In the span of less than 10 days, I’ve gone from a 2-length (2 x 20 yards/18.39 meters) maximum to swimming more than 40 lengths per workout in sets of 2 and 4. Here’s how I did it after everything else failed, and how you can do the same… I'll probably keep practicing the last couple of drills for 10 minutes or so every session for as long as I keep swimming, as there are so many subtle improvements that can be made, but I now spend the vast majority of time at the pool doing 'normal' full-stroke swimming.

When I got home I did some research on swimming to find the best swimming manual available. What I found was Total Immersion. By focusing on proper body position, body rotation, and a long, natural stroke, you can reduce resistance in the water and swim more efficiently. With time and practice, you’ll be able to swim with proper technique and reach the sensation of “swimming downhill.” How to “Swim Downhill” with Total Immersion Swimming This book works, at every level. Best of all, it takes the struggle out of swimming, and you get better and better simply because you become curious about moving in the water. If you take the time to truly observe children who have just started swimming, you will see that they immediately have TWO swimming styles: 1. they use doggy-paddle with a near vertical body which produces very little forward motion; 2. they swim horizontally very effectively underwater, then stop and stand up every 3-5 metres. If you look closer, you will see that when using doggy paddle, they also hold their breath, stop and stand up every 1-2 metres! If you self-teach, it can be a very inexpensive way to learn to swim. However, you can hire coaches that are dedicated to teaching the total immersion swimming method.Total immersion swimming encourages long-reaching swim strokes, becoming like an arrow in the water. As a result, by extending your body to become long, you will “slip” through the water and naturally become faster just by this one optimisation. Learn to breath on both your right and left sides. If there is a chop, it really helps to be able to comfortably turn your head away from the waves to breath. If not, you are choking…not breathing. TI swimming emphasizes long and economic strokes, spearing into the water much like how a fish navigates the water. The techniques also promote greater body roll by rotating the hips from side to side versus the more conventional approach of keeping them still or straight. When I first learnt this tip, it confused me as anchors are something that holds you in the water and does not propel you forward, right? One of the main criticisms towards total immersion is that it just not look natural. Although that is precisely what its founder wanted it to be (to swim like a fish, not as a human does), some argue that total immersion teaches people wrong concepts, such as to keep your head fully underwater.
