PS MTB triple chainsets have the wrong chainline (typically 50mm) for a road bike (typically needing 43.5mm). For the latest versions of its top three groupsets, Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105, Shimano has incorporated its Shadow technology, brought over from the mountain bike side of the business. I've been through 4 chains. SRAM 951 is my usual - yes it's 9 speed, not 8 but IME it cures rubbing on the front mech on a triple.

And say your bike is fitted with an 11-28T cassette: the difference between the large one and the small one (28 minus 11) is 17 teeth. Add them together and you get a total difference (16 plus 17) of 33 teeth. Where an 11-28 cassette would have once been considered a large training cassette, it now sits at the lower end of the typical range for road. Ultegra is available in all of those plus 11-25 and 14-28. There’s no reason why you can’t use an Ultegra cassette with an otherwise 105 groupset, or vice versa.The 105 levers have been redesigned with shifting mechanisms that make the shift a bit more snappy than before, and the shape of the lever is squarer, slightly more compact and features a patterned rubber cover for extra grip on the hoods. However shifters, lets call them briftors, are subject to damage more frequently than any other component on a bike, so why go with DA briftors when 105 works extremely well and gets better with the addition of DA9000 cables? The cost to replace DA briftors would make the average person's head spin, and with changes going on all the time, if you break one you'll probably end up replacing both because you more than likely won't be able to find a replacement that matches the unbroken one still on the bike.

This setup allows me to still ride in the Peak District at 60 years old and is in no way a soft option but allows me to average 14mph over very lumpy terrain riding solo. Both 105 and Ultegra are 11-speed systems and there are many more similarities between them than differences. Although Ultegra is more expensive, all of the same technology features in 105, and you operate them in exactly the same way.If you are still using a triple crankset, you may have sufficient overall range with a road cassette, but this is a fairly specialist application these days. It's also worth mentioning the dedicated cyclo-cross chainsets which have reduced chainring sizes (Shimano's FC-CX50 offers 46, 36 chainrings). The most common system is the Shimano 11-speed HG-style freehub, which has 9 splines. Most Shimano groupsets up to the 11-speed era used this style of freehub. SRAM groupsets prior to the current generation of 12-speed groupsets also used the same freehub design, although there are a handful of exceptions with the larger cassette ratios on their 1×11 groupsets.
