Kennedy said that anyone who is familiar with British history knows that Kennedy’s two names predecessors were not the most beloved or successful in British history. While it is difficult to determine if it was the right name for the job, it seems unlikely that it matters to the majority of British citizens. This was a telling insight into how the British people view their relationship with the Royal Family—not much dulled by the fact that, in the end, the Sussexes were “allowed” to retreat from their public duties after agreeing to an exit plan with other senior royals. In a normal society, anyone should be free to plot their own course; nobody’s life ought to be subject to public control. But in monarchical Britain, oppressive social expectation is not unusual. Abandoning one’s station is to be frowned upon, whether rich or poor. Canadians may be divided on whether to cast off the royal moorings, but they have a clear idea of the method to use to decide the issue: a national referendum. Last September, 58 per cent of respondents told IPSOS they wanted Justin Trudeau to organize such a consultation. Obviously, the wish is stronger in Quebec (73 per cent), but one finds a majority everywhere except in the Prairies (where the figure is between 45 and 49 per cent.) Instead of a coronation we want an election. Instead of Charles we want a choice. It’s that simple. #NotMyKing #AbolishTheMonarchy— Republic (@RepublicStaff) May 6, 2023

You could also argue that the monarchy was maintained because of Queen Elizabeth II. The desire to abolish it now could only grow with her death. But, it was not immediately thought about what might happen if the monarchy were abolished. Despite calls to abolish the monarchy trending on social media, Levin doesn't see actually it happening, but that doesn't mean changes won't be made. But over the years I have seen many sensible people of leftish persuasion scuttle off to the palace for a garden party or to accept a gong. They do it not for themselves, but for their mums. Wear a fascinator to get feudal, dears. (Although all men need is a suit.) Would an elected head of state be better? Yes, actually Levin said that Charles II, in fact, was a unifier of the restoration. While it is beautiful and can provide continuity, he still has to be the king of everyone. It was remarkable that his mother, Queen Elizabeth II (the monarch whom people can relate to), was so impressive. Graham Smith, Abolish the Monarchy: Why We Should and How We Will, published by Penguin, 1 June 2023. Indeed many question why we are even having a coronation, given that most other European countries have long since abolished them, the last one in Spain was in 1555 and Denmark, Sweden and Norway have all deemed them archaic and unnecessary since 1906.)

An important question to ask here is, if the United Kingdom did not currently have a monarchy, would anyone be advocating one? And this brings me to perhaps the most affecting reason I have abandoned my affection for the monarchy: the sheer cruelty of it to those unfortunate enough to have been born into it. Well, a lot of people believe the monarchy to be an outdated institution. Many argue that the royal family no longer has a place in our country, particularly during a cost of living crisis and rising inequality across the country. In other words: King Charles I witnessed the fall of monarchy, and created the 10 year-long Commonwealth, under Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. This Commonwealth was then restored under King Charles II. The UK will not likely be in another civil war. However, social media could ignite the fires and make Charles the last monarch.

British comedian, actor, and writer Russell Brand has been critical of the monarchy in the past, and in a 14-minute video posted to his YouTube channel on September 9, he described the queen as: "A constant presence, in this constancy we find a certain stability. But if we examine it, it's also a symbol of our inability to bring about real change. If there is one criticism I would make of Abolish the Monarchy, it is that it is at times too tame, too moderate. This is part of Republic’s strategy to widen its appeal, but it does a disservice to the genuine radicalism at the heart of the republican position. This is why Abolish the Monarchy does not quite fit into the great British pamphleteering tradition epitomised by Thomas Paine. Although Queen Elizabeth II was one its most loyal supporters, her passing may not have any effect on it.
