And it isn’t just a case of analogies, majority of ancient stories when comparing retellings to written accounts are astonishingly accurate over millennia. Laughs] I was writing the Machu Picchu book, and I read this headline in the New York Times: “German discovers Atlantis in Africa.” I was like, what? The fact that someone could actually search for Atlantis and be taken seriously was weird. One of the things I’ve found with people reading this book is that different people find themselves sympathizing with different theories. I have four main theories, and I talk to the people behind the theories and visit the locations.

Jose Maria Galan worked at Doñana National Park [on the southern coast of Spain]. He took me out to the shore there and said: “In the summer, you’ll see thousands of people lying out on the beach. Now imagine that there’s a wave 60 meters high coming in, and you can see how a civilization could get wiped out right away.” And to all of them he gave names, giving to him that was eldest and king the name after which the whole island was called and the sea spoken of as the Atlantic, because the first king who then reigned had the name of Atlas." Novella, Stephen (19 November 2018). "No – Atlantis Has Not Been Discovered in North Africa". NeuroLogica . Retrieved 8 November 2023. The topography surrounding the Richat Structure supports the notion that Africa had suffered a gigantic flood. In satellite images, it looks as if something literally swept over the entire area towards the sea. The gravelly deposits include slope scree, debris flow and fluviatile, or even torrential flow, deposits, supporting Plato’s description that the area was flooded "within a single day and a night." 11. The Eye of Osiris A video is making the rounds claiming “proof” that Atlantis existed in norther Africa. This video is by Jimmy from Bright Insight and it is an excellent example of crank pseudoscience. Jimmy has made himself into a social media brand, with lots of conspiracy and pseudohistory nonsense to sell, but let’s focus on this one video for now.

The circular isle of Atlantis was described to have a diameter of 127 Stadia. 1 Stadia = 607 feet. When you multiply 127 x 607, the result is 77,089 ft. This is equivalent to around 14.6 miles – the diameter of the Eye. More Similarities Between Atlantis and the Eye of the Sahara Plato said, “There were alternate zones of sea and land, larger and shallower, encircling one another. There were two of land and three of water, which were turned as if with a lathe each having its circumference equidistant every way from the center.”

I was intrigued by the explanation of the biblical story of the parting of the Red Sea being a tsunami and the Santorini explosion theory—can you tell us more about that?

Location:Northwestern Taoudeni Basin, Central Adrar Plateau, west-central Mauritania in the Sahara Desert near Ouadane

The location of the Eye (Athens and Egypt): The Richat Structure is geographically well related to places associated with Plato’s Atlantis. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the north of Africa, and the Atlantean navy is said to have besieged ancient Athens on its shores. Over in north-east Africa lies Egypt, from where Plato apparently received his information (via Solon) about Atlantis. It has also been suggested that Egypt used to be a colony of Atlantis. Thus far, it’s all looking promising. Many conspiracists and documentaries, including Jimmy Corsetti of Bright Insight, have attempted to link the Richat structure with the lost city of Atlantis ruins, described by Plato in 360 BCE. Plato described Atlantis with circles dividing land and water, i.e., concentric rings and Richat structure may appear as ruins. Abdeina, E. Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 14(22). https://doi.org/10.1007/s12517-021-08734-4 Could a curious geological formation in the Mauritanian part of the Sahara desert anything to do with the lost city of Atlantis? And, as for the opening to the ocean, Novela points out that the sand drift to the southwest Bright Insight refers to is actually more to west than south, as the YouTube channel claims. It also doesn’t open up to the ocean, which is to the west.People around the world are waking up to a realization that there is more to life than meets the senses. There is a growing desire to know who we are, where we come from, and what we are capable of. While these aren’t new questions, advancing technologies and exploration of what constitutes consciousness may require us to ask these essential questions in a new way. Are the Pyramids Doorways to Other Realities? As previously mentioned, the sea destroyed Atlantis 9,000 years prior to Solon’s visit outlined through a 2,500-year-old book. If these accounts were accurate, this would have occurred roughly 11,500 years ago. Now, the only way for water to rush in and over the region of the Richat Structure would logically be a rapid rise in sea level. How could this happen? The location of the Eye (Atlas Mountains): The Richat Structure lies around 700 km (440 miles) south of the Atlas Mountains, which are associated with the legendary Atlas of Greek mythology. Atlas was said to have been the first king of Mauretania (meaning ancient Maghreb or north-west Africa, rather than the modern country). According to Plato, Atlas was the first king of Atlantis and the son of Poseidon. So there appears to be some sort of link between Atlantis and the Atlas Mountains, which aren’t that far away from the Richat Structure.
