About this deal

The Castle Dungeon is not suitable for people with claustrophobia due to the enclosed space, narrow pathways and small rooms The second main horror maze of the evening was Hunted. Again the two of them went off to try this one together and were gone just over half an hour with queues and the actual maze itself, compared to The Crest. My favourite part of all, however, was one of the many tours of the castle by historian Andrew, who really knew how to hold an audience. He was funny and informative – everything a tour guide should be. There was also a more grisly tour, which takes visitors through the main rooms of the castle and tells tales of murders at the grounds many years ago.

Bloxham was caught stealing from the Earl and was put under brutal torture and shame in front of the public. Shortly after this, the dog appeared and started to cause havoc around the castle grounds. And these ghosts that are believed to haunt this castle are just as bizarre and malicious as you might expect. Sir Fulke Greville The Haunted Castle is available to explore every day, 10am to 5pm, and guests can attend haunted shows, visit the haunted hollows, witch's tower or find their way through the Horrible Histories maze. Evening Post wrote, “The Grey Lady, however, whose origin is wrapped in mystery, has been seen by many members of the family up to the present day. The Grandmother of the present Earl was always seeing her, while many servants have borne witness to catching a glimpse of her furtive figure flitting about the long corridors. Doors open without reason, the “Grey Lady” appears and then passes on, and when the astonished spectator goes to find her there is nothing.” I won't give too much away, but it's a thoroughly entertaining jaunt with each character brought to life (or death!) enthusiastically by their respective actors. It's billed as an attraction for children over five. And while my daughter was a little puzzled at times, she was by no means terrified by the creepy chain of events that unfolded.Although the castle played host to many visitors throughout the 18th century, it wasn’t till 1858, when Queen Victoria payed a visit to the castle. In 1938, it began its current purpose of a hotel and has received good business despite the horrors that lurk inside. Ettington Park Hotel has a great many ghouls, most are suspected to originate from the Shirley Family who possessed the hotel from the days of the Doomsday Book to the 1960s. Registered assistance dogs are not permitted to enter The Castle Dungeon due to low lighting, steps throughout, light effects and loud noises The castle's 64-acres of land has been given an eerie touch and is available to explore, as well as the castle dungeon. Disabled guests (and/or a registered Carer) with physical impairment(s) restricting mobility can experience the final four rooms free of charge, which are standard wheelchair accessible. Please speak to the team at The Castle Dungeon entrance for more information

The building is steeped in rich history having survived a raging fire from an unknown force, an outbreak of plague and the English Civil War and frequentlyreceiving visitations from the famous William Shakespeare. The paranormal activity at Salford Hall Hotel is rife throughout the property. The majority of the ghosts that haunt here all seem to have some connection to a religious theme. One of the most common spectres to be seen at Salford Hall Hotel is probably the ghostly nun. She is usually seen on the lower floor of the hotel and has been reported by both staff members and guests alike! She is thought to be the restless soul of a nun who was brutally murdered here sometime in the 17 th century.Grevile died on the thirtieth of September 1628, he had recently written a will and it had been released. A servant of Grevile's named Ralph Heywood had been left out of the will. Heywood felt that he was entitled to be included in the will and confronted Grevile about this. Grevile explained that he simply did not have enough money and this angered Heywood. Heywood stabbed Greville, but then felt great guilt about what he had done and turned the knife on himself. Heywood died instantly but Grevile took much longer to die, He died alone trapped in the south tower where he was stabbed.

More recently Sir Fulke’s tragic death was turned into an actor-based attraction at the castle by its next owners the Tussauds Group in 2004. A man described as ‘America’s top extreme scream director’, Lynton V Harris, was employed to devise a 6-8 minute attraction in which visitors would be entertained by lighting effects and actors in makeup. Wildly successful both with audiences and the accounting department, the show’s narrative was equally successful at reducing our poet’s story to its gruesome end, not to mention brushing over the fact that this horrific act occurred nearly one hundred miles away. However, the most well-known ghost that haunted Ettington Park Hotel is perhaps the Lady in White. This is the spirit of a woman who is all dressed in white as she glides through the hotel’s corridors before vanishing into a wall which is always, quite understandably, said to startle guests who see it. She can also be found on the veranda most nights at around dusk (Staff have suggested that she could be ‘Lady Emma’ who served as a governess at one time. Fulke Greville’s singular painted portrait now rests in a dark corner of the castle, competing for attention with wax portraits of Henry VIII and his wives. Despite this, Greville’s spectacular tomb in St Mary’s Church survives as the most evocative and haunting expression of his life as Trophaeum Peccati or ‘Sin’s Trophy’. We really enjoyed it and went through here twice - and were still scared by different characters each time. For both events, the characters and actors really make it for you.The Bishop of Worcester, was not keen on the idea of a church being in a castle had it removed in 1127.

This was their favourite out of the two - and they said it wasn't for the faint-hearted. It takes you into the depths of the castle making for a real scary setting. My partner described it as "hair-raising" with plenty of jump scares. In 1885, the Earl had grown annoyed by all the people coming and going through the home he closed the castle’s doors to tourists.Upscares Downscares was very entertaining and got all the younger children involved - the characters really make it and are incredibly funny. Penny Pumpkin and Sylvia the Skeleton are all too happy to share a spooky yarn as you weave through the Hollows, where ghouls and gravestones are never far from view. Penny and Sylvia were brilliantly acted and the spooky sets incredibly well thought out. The servant was unimpressed with the sum. He considered it paltry and insubstantial to what he felt he was owed in return for his labour. In rage and fury, he stabbed Fulke with a flurry of blows from a blade at his house in London. Guests can] hear the tales of The Haunted Castle from the roaming characters and marvel at the birds of prey as they soar overhead in the epic Falconer’s Quest show."
