Top 100 (ARIA Chart) peaks from January 1990 to December 2010: Ryan, Gavin (2011). Australia's Music Charts 1988–2010. Mt. Martha, VIC, Australia: Moonlight Publishing. Terence Trent D'Arby was born Terence Trent Howard in Manhattan in 1962. [3] His mother is Frances Howard, a gospel singer, [4] teacher and counselor. Frances Howard married Bishop James Benjamin Darby, who became his stepfather and raised him. He took this stepfather's last name and later added the apostrophe. Wishing Well, Dance Little Sister and Sign Your Name all became Top 20 hits and earned him Brits and Grammys (he won Best Male R&B Vocal in 1989 after losing to Jody Watley for Best New Artist the previous year).D'Arby had hit songs including "Dance Little Sister", "Sign Your Name" and the #1 hit "Wishing Well". In an interview, D'Arby played with the press and expressed a high opinion of his first album, claiming that it was the most important album since the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. [1] After the comments leaked to US media outlets, he stated that most of what he said was exaggerated, but that it is sometimes necessary to "hit people over the head" to get their attention. [12] The album earned him a Grammy Award in the category Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male (1989) [13] and a BRIT Award for International Breakthrough Act, and he also received Grammy and Soul Train nominations for Best New Artist. [14]

D'Arby's follow-up album, Neither Fish nor Flesh (1989), [8] was very different from his debut, and though producer Martyn Ware stated in a 2021 interview that the album was way ahead of its time, [15] [13] it was a critical and commercial disappointment. [16] It took four more years and a move to Los Angeles until his next album, Symphony or Damn (1993), was released. The record contained the singles "Delicate" and "She Kissed Me". It peaked at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. [8] In 1995, D'Arby released Vibrator, which was followed by a world tour. [8] a b "Terence Trent D'Arby Chart History (Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums)". Billboard. On 15 March 2021, Maitreya released his 12th studio album, Pandora's PlayHouse, which included three collaborations, the song "Reflecting Light", [26] composed with the Australian duo The Avalanches; " Time Is On My Side" with Irene Grandi and the opening song of the project: "Pandora's Plight" with jazz pianist Antonio Faraò. The project has an instrumental song called "Prince", [27] which honors the memory and the friendship of Maitreya and Prince.

He had been born in 1962 to a Minister father and teacher mother, both of whom sang gospel in church and encouraged young Terence to do the same. It was while in Germany that Terence began his burgeoning career as a musician. He threw himself into Frankfurt’s vibrant bustling live music scene, eventually finding himself as the frontman of a band called Touch, which he described as “Earth Wind & Fire-meets-The Who”.

It was the last day of our allocated time in the studio, and I was exhausted. I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve finally gotten my first record out of the way, and my co-producer Martyn Ware looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think we have it yet’. I couldn’t believe it. He thought the album was missing one more thing that was completely different to everything else. He suggested I record something a cappella that focuses on my voice. I went into the canteen with a notepad and 15 minutes later, I had this song finished. While performing it, I realised its uniqueness, and I could understand why it needed to be on the record. We had less than a couple of hours to finish it, so I didn’t have time to second-guess myself. The irony is that of all the hits Hardline yielded, this one has been the most re-recorded or remixed. Just a year ago, I worked with the immensely talented Calvin Harris on another version of it.” Seraphina Simone Frances Christina D'ARBY". Companies House (UK Government) . Retrieved 15 March 2023.When he got older, Terence, disillusioned by his strict religious upbringing, escaped first by going to college to study journalism, then training as a boxer before enlisting in the US Army.

Influential magazines such as Rolling Stone, Spin, People and Village Voice all ran profiles taking him to task for his arrogance.Glenn A. Baker (28 January 1989). "Australia '89" (PDF). Billboard. Vol.101, no.4. p.A-4 . Retrieved 23 June 2021– via World Radio History. Except for Seven More Days and If You Let Me Stay which was done by Howard Grey, the red headed scouser of Camden, the remaining 9 songs were not "produced" but rather 'hardened' by Martyn 'Teddy Bear' Ware and Terence Trent D'Arby. It was sonically captured and psycho-acoustically assaulted by Phil 'Foghorn' Legg, The Laughing Man. Over the course of the following year, it went on to spend nine (non-consecutive) weeks at No.1 in the UK, returning to the top spot each time he released a single from it.
