About this deal

How is religion, particulary Catholicism, treated in the novel? Is it a legitimate source of strength or simply another crutch to avoid dealing with the real problems in Dolores' family? The narrative of She's Come Undone is captivating and intense, making it a truly unforgettable read.

Dolores is plagued with heartache, hurt and uncertainty. As a teenager it seems that every person she allows close to her hurts her. She withdraws herself inward and finds comfort in the television and food, losing all interest in the outside world. By doing so she creates more problems for herself, mentally and physically.Dante seemed merely a pawn, convenient to the author for whatever drama he wanted to introduce to Dolores, but there was no consistency in him throughout the book. In conclusion, summarize your reading experience with She's Come Undone. What grade would you give this novel?

After reading (listening to) this story (forcibly Suggested by a friend) I have come to realize that I am indeed Dolores Price - born a few years later - but also Molested and traumatized on several levels. I am currently in my FAT Phase - and Im motivated - and I found as I was Cheering for Delores to allow herself happiness - I realized I TOO was denying myself happiness. She doesn't tell him that she basically stalked him, and they start a relationship fast. Before you know it, Dolores is pregnant (she lied about being on the pill, too) and Dante wants her to get an abortion. Reluctantly, she does. Then they get married, and it's all downhill as Dante starts cheating and becoming abusive… just like Dolores's father. I really didn't like this book. It was recommended to me as an example of a man that could write with a womens voice. Nope. I didn't buy it. I also didn't buy his understanding of growing up as a fat girl. So Poo on you Mr. Lamb. I absolutely wanted to listen to it all in one sitting, it was that good. But I didn't opt for the abridged version, which I could have listened to in one sitting because I didn't want to miss any of the story. I'm glad I didn't. It was a book club selection, and I wanted to be able to fully participate in the discussion..Best: The story is excellent. This author creates very believable characters. Least: Linda Stephens' performance. The Guess Who: The Concert (recorded in Winnipeg, June 30, 2000), Directed by Rico Labbe, Saifer Entertainment, 2000 As a youth he's a loving and devoted Christian, when Dolores meets him he's a womanizing playboy but becomes an attentive thoughtful, boyfriend, then he turns into a critical and selfish spouse, then a cheat, then a virtual pedophile. I think readers will appreciate how realistic Dolores' character arc is in She's Come Undone; she makes mistakes but ultimately learns from them and finds a way to keep going forward despite her struggles.

Even a person who should understand her pain and what she faces as an obese person, really turns out to be a user, and that part was very hard to read. I bought the unabridged audio version, so I didn't miss a thing from the print version, which we were reading as a book club. It was a long book, so being pressed for time, I needed to be able to be able to get through it while doing things that I wouldn't be able to do while "reading" and vice versa. Just under two months later on October 12th, 1969 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #78; and on November 23rd, 1969 it peaked at #22 {for 1 week} and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... I know MANY insightful, perceptive men who understand women, so I don't find it a stretch that a man can write with a woman's voice. This is creative fiction after all. But there is one quality an audiobook may possess that you cannot get in print -- an actual voice reciting the inner monologue of your protagonist. If that voice is first person and at least sometimes comic (as is the case here on both counts), a narrator that captures that voice can make the listening experience far more effective than the voice inside your head when you read in print.I also have to admit to having personal knowledge of the author - which in no way colors my opinion of this book. Mr. Lamb was a writing teacher at my high school in CT and actually helped me quite a bit in writing my college application essays. I got in to every school I applied for - even my reach school - and I am positive that the essay I wrote was the biggest tipping point. My essay was really good and it was wholly because of Mr. Lamb and his suggestions, pointers and all around encouragement. As a person, Mr. Lamb is wonderful and I will always remember him with high praise. How is Dolores' sexuality used to reflect her voyage in society Is her path in life guided by her dysfunctional relationships with men, beginning with her father, or are the men in her life simply potholes in her quest to search for her identity? Nearly 200 titles into my audiobook habit, I'm still trying to figure out what makes for a good listen vs. a traditional read, especially within my favorite genres. I've grown somewhat wary of audio editions of literary novels -- they are almost always character-driven and light on plot, and therefore difficult in some cases to follow in audio. But it's still my favorite style of fiction, so I keep trying. Barry Mclarry from Los AngelesGreat song with very sad and haunting lyrics about a young girl who experiences many disappointments in her life and “climbs a mountain far too high” (takes drugs?) to try and cope with her troubles but finds out “she couldn’t fly” and by then it was “too late, she’s gone too far” Dead whale metaphors: Give me a break, Wally! Was this really necessary? Best you could come up with? Why not just club me over the head and have done with it?

The Buchbinders: The couple that hires Dolores to work in their store after the death of her grandmother.

She experiences the worst that life can throw at her, dealing with obesity, insanity, close friends dying from AIDS, adultry, but fills her with such life and generosity of spirit that at no point does it come across as heavy handed or mawkish. Lamb never plays for the easy tears or attempts to pull on your heart strings so as a reader you never feel manipulated. Linda's performance was not that of a professional reader. Her voice is pleasant. But her reading was awful. Periods and commas where used in exactly the same way, and in many cases are added to the reading in inappropriate places (by Linda, not by the author). It was very distracting. I almost stopped reading because of it. Then the story grabbed me and stopping was not an option. Linda has the voice, she needs training and practice. Movie was a great idea. As for characters; I would have no idea how to second guess the professionals, since I rarely watch a movie and do not know who the current actors are. A heroine to cheer for … This supremely touching journey to adulthood may remind you of "The World According to Garp" and other sagas of emotional liberation."
