About this deal

Acute otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear)and ‘glue ear’ can affect one or both ears in children. In adults, both ears being affected may be a sign of age-related hearing loss; however, if only one ear is affected, further investigations may be required to exclude other causes, such as an acoustic neuroma (a benign growth on the hearing and balance nerve). If you have earwax buildup, certain ear drops can soften and loosen your earwax for easier removal. There are three types of softening drops for earwax: water-based, non-water-based and oil-based. If you have impacted earwax, a healthcare provider may recommend ear drops containing:

Although it is not always clear what causes tinnitus, it is often associated with damage to the inner ear [15] If you have an ear infection, your healthcare provider may recommend antifungal or antibiotic ear drops. Active ingredients in these ear drops often include: Awad Z, Huins C & Pothier D. Antivirals for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. 2012. We aim to provide you with the knowledge and support you need to make confident decisions about your Patients presenting with sudden hearing loss in one ear as a sole symptom should be referred urgently to a GP. The cause may be sensorineural (i.e. caused by a lesion or disease of the inner ear or the auditory nerve) and oral steroids with or without antiviral medication may be beneficial [11], [12]

Adverse events (such as irritation, otitis externa and perforation of ear drum) were reported in the evidence for hydrogen peroxide before irrigation, but the committee noted that the majority of studies did not report adverse events, so no conclusions could be drawn about adverse events of other treatments. The committee noted that sodium bicarbonate can also cause irritation. In contrast, there is some evidence that favours hydrogen peroxide alone (without irrigation). The committee noted the risk of potential confounding, for example if patients have used a cotton bud at the same time as the softener. The committee confirmed that hydrogen peroxide is no longer used in most clinical settings; however, it is available in pharmacies and is commonly used by the public in self-management. There is no evidence that hydrogen peroxide is more effective than other softeners before irrigation and there is evidence of a risk of adverse events, however overall the committee did not feel that there was sufficient evidence to justify making a negative recommendation about hydrogen peroxide. There are several different types of eardrops you can use, including drops containing sodium bicarbonate, olive oil or almond oil.

Too much earwax for comfort? We recommend the best ear wax removers to unblock your ears quickly and safely

If irritation or pain occurs during use, or if symptoms persist, stop treatment and ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Soda Bicarb Glycerin Ear Drop is used to soften the dry and hardened ear wax. This allows easy removal of the wax inside the ear thereby reducing ear discomfort. Ear drops are liquid medications that you put inside your ear canal. You can buy some kinds of ear drops over the counter. Others require a prescription from a healthcare provider.

Gradual loss of hearing suggests age-related hearing loss. However, if a sudden sensorineural hearing loss occurs, patients should be seen urgently by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to assess whether oral steroids should be given to optimise recovery of hearing. But even the most innocuous ear drops should be avoided if you have, or may have, a perforated eardrum. So if you’re suffering pain, see your doctor or a pharmacist for advice first. The NHS’s Health & Care Video Library has a useful short film on dealing with ear wax safely. What ingredients should I look for in an ear wax remover? What is the clinical and cost effectiveness of microsuction compared with irrigation to remove earwax? National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Hearing loss in adults: assessment and management. NICE guideline [NG98]. 2018. Available at: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng98 (accessed November 2019)The sensation of hearing noises that are not caused by an external source, known as tinnitus, is associated with hearing loss in 90% of patients (although many patients are unaware of their hearing loss as it may be mild and of gradual onset) [13] NHS England. Don’t try to scrape out the earwax with your finger or an object inserted into your ear, as this this can make the problem worse. There was a clinically important benefit for successful removal of wax when this was performed by syringing in a clinic compared with removal using home kits. When comparing ear drops against each other, the only clinically important benefit observed was when chlorobutanol was compared with saline drops prior to immediate syringing. Long-term glue ear can affect a child’s hearing and speech development, their concentration, behaviour and performance at school [5] Bilateral tinnitus is common, but if it only affects one ear, patients should be referred to an ENT specialist for an MRI scan to excludeacoustic neuroma.
