About this deal

However, alternative theories have been put forward, including the idea that it’s a mistranscription of ‘Sicariot’, meaning ‘dagger man’ or ‘terrorist’ – after a group of assassins, the Sicarii, who concealed daggers beneath their cloaks and carried out murders amongst crowds of people in an effort to resist Roman rule in the region. Many different accounts of Judas's death have survived from antiquity, both within and outside the New Testament. [36] [37] Matthew 27:1–10 states that after learning that Jesus was to be crucified, Judas was overcome by remorse and attempted to return the 30 pieces of silver to the priests, but they would not accept them because they were blood money, so he threw them on the ground and left. Afterwards, he committed suicide by hanging himself [38] according to Mosaic law ( Deuteronomy 21:22–23 [39]). The priests then used the money to buy a potter's field, which became known as Akeldama (חקל דמא – khakel dama) – the Field of Blood – because it had been bought with blood money. [38] Acts 1:18 states that Judas used the money to buy a field, [38] [40] and "[fell] headlong... burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." [38] In this account, Judas's death is apparently by accident, [38] and he shows no signs of remorse. [38] I admit the play sometimes sprawls and but it is a gloriously intoxicating brew that, in its fantasy and daring, reminds me of Tony Kushner's equally high-flying Angels in America. It is then immediately overshadowed by the aforementioned final conversation between Judas and Jesus.

H: This show is so funny and ridiculous. You’re not meant to feel all serious walking away from it. On certain levels, I want it to show that we are allowed to laugh at life and at our mistakes. I want the audience to look at these people who existed so long ago and be left with the choice to either be like Judas who haunts and tortures himself for the rest of his life, or be like the characters who have just chosen to let go and forgive themselves. There is a clear answer on who’s doing better. It’s also a way to get the audience to think: this is a new portrayal of Judas and shows Caiaphas, Pontius Pilate, the disciples and all of these other real figures in history from a new perspective. With that comes a new level of introspective thinking. Thomas Sullivan ’23, who plays Jesus of Nazareth, focused on adding spirituality to his performance. “The show really challenges you to look into yourself and explore your own morality and ideology,” he said. The Gospel of Mark gives no motive for Judas's betrayal but does present Jesus predicting it at the Last Supper, an event also described in all the other gospels. The Gospel of Matthew 26:15 states that Judas committed the betrayal in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. The Gospel of Luke 22:3 and the Gospel of John 13:27 suggest that he was possessed by Satan. According to Matthew 27:1–10, after learning that Jesus was to be crucified, Judas attempted to return the money he had been paid for his betrayal to the chief priests and hanged himself. [2] The priests used the money to buy a field to bury strangers in, which was called the " Field of Blood" because it had been bought with blood money. The Book of Acts 1:18 quotes Peter as saying that Judas used the money to buy the field himself and, he "[fell] headlong... burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." His place among the Twelve Apostles was later filled by Matthias. The Bible offers differing accounts of Judas's death. The Gospel of Matthew describes him hanging himself after realizing the depths of his betrayal. The Book of Acts, on the other hand, describes his death more like a spontaneous combustion. Controversy surrounds the Gospel of Judas, as some scholars have argued that the National Geographic Society’s version represented a mistranslation of the Coptic text and that the public was wrongly made to believe the document portrayed a “noble Judas.” In any case, the fact that the Gospel of Judas was written at least a century after Jesus and Judas died means that it provides little in the way of historically reliable information about their lives, and certainly doesn’t provide the missing link to understanding Judas Iscariot’s true motivations.

In the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Judas is punished for all eternity in the ninth circle of Hell: in it, he is devoured by Lucifer, alongside Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus (leaders of the group of senators that assassinated Julius Caesar). The innermost region of the ninth circle is reserved for traitors of masters and benefactors and is named Judecca, after Judas. Smith, Barry D. (2010). We’re using a thrust configuration, so the audience is on three sides,” Sheffield said. In a sense, the audience members are the jury, and Judas can’t escape their judgment, no matter where he turns.a b c d e Oropeza, B.J. (2010).
