About this deal

Stewed apples, dried fruit, leather, nutty malt, smoke and some bits of charcoal and dried strawberries. With the reopening of Benromach, Gordon & MacPhail wanted to try this classic approach. To do so, they use mostly medium-peated barley (12 ppm). And the result is, obviously, a lightly peated single malt. Mouth: quite smooth, with elegant smoke, oranges and herbal honey. Hints of eucalyptus and mint. Some crushed peppercorns. Plummy sweetness but also dried nuts and liquorice. Still this subtle dustiness – really nice.

Enter Benromach 10, which I grabbed in December, whilst in search of a New Year’s Eve bottle that wouldn’t bore me to sleep before midnight. Owned by the excellent independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is a small distillery in Forres which purports to make Speyside whisky ‘the old fashioned way’. The Benromach 10 100° holds its own against many other older more expensive whiskies, this punches well above its weight. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. It's a complex interplay between creamy vanilla, nuts, roasted coffee beans, chocolate, dark fruits and salted caramel.Crafted from “the finest oak casks” of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, this release doesn’t seem to have the additional sherry finish that it previously had. The old ‘Romach 10 was a marriage of 80% ex-Bourbon and 20% ex-Sherry casks that spent 12 months finishing in ex-Oloroso casks. It is a quality product, perhaps the best 10 year old matured whisky I've ever tried. There is no sign of youth in it whatsoever, it is more like a 12 year old, possibly all the way up to a 14 year old matured scotch. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.

Bottled at a respectable 57% ABV non-chill filtered and non-colored this robust whisky is still friendly and accesible to anyone with patience yet it respects the purist, the spirit and the traditions too. It has enough body to take some water and opens up with a few drops, patience is rewarded with this one. This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky.

What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Even though we usually identify peated whiskies with Islay, not so long ago there was a bit of peat smoke in lots of whiskies, including Speyside. That is why it isn’t so strange to find a slightly smoky touch in Johnnie Walker, the best-selling blended scotch. When you let it breathe and open up the nose on this is one of the best, very oldskool. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying.
