About this deal

The most interesting sections didn't happen until toward the end of the book. They were the chapters covering the spread of the bubonic plague in the middle ages and the pest control measures that were taken after 9/11. The latter was particularly interesting because that's not something people really think about. But other than that, meh. The female can have from five to eight liters a year with anything from four to twelve in a liter. Then the randy buggers are at it again in a couple of hours." Meanwhile, a school teacher who hates children realises that lots of people are also getting eaten by rats, so he goes to the countryside with his girlfriend–who works in a shop and appears to exist solely to make him bacon and eggs–and they do it on a hill. This bit is so toe-curlingly awful that I started to yearn for my own death at the jaws of a mass of homicidal rodents. The school teacher puts his thingy in her and does it really fast so she has a lady orgasm. This is presumably as much of a surprise to her as it was the the other woman, given that nobody in this terrible book appears to have any intelligence whatsover. In addition, the author is at pains to tell us that he does not like rats and thinks they're disgusting. He exhibits a strange squeamishness, even after spending many hours watching rats. As someone who does feel a level of compassion and interest in rats as animals, I found his attitude tiresome. He seemed concerned that the audience might actually think he liked his subjects.

The third was a children's literature class taught by a school librarian. Although her main job was in an elementary school, she was qualified to be a college professor. An unlikely friendship develops as Horst looks to Sands, inheritor of his own and strangely interconnected family tragedy, to help him do the work that he cannot do alone: to exonerate his father’s soul.

Herbert stated in later interviews that he wrote the book primarily as a pastime: "It seemed like a good idea at the time, I was as naive as that." [1] The manuscript was typed by Herbert's wife Eileen, who sent it off after nine months to nine different publishers. [1] Reception [ edit ] For some reason, I share Sullivan’s fascination with universally despised but fascinating creatures. (for a good example of this I highly recommend Kelsi Nagy’s wonderful book “Trash Animals”)

At home, rats are very social animals and live in large colonies, sometimes creating extensive burrows. The rodents work together, and studies suggest that social isolation has serious impacts on rat welfare. Rat superpowers He is the inhabitant of the family seat – “a vast, dilapidated, empty, magnificent castle” in Upper Austria bequeathed to him by his mother. He’s also the last defender of his father’s honour and, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Horst refuses to believe that his father was a criminal at all. I did not expect to read a novel first published in 1974 and find it so gruesome as a modern-day reader! This was probably a massive oversight on my part, given that this was the book that defined a genre! Just a few days ago, we were able to uncover the first major casting news of The Witcher Season 4: Sharlto Copely ( District 9, Elysium) will portray the violent mercenary Bonhart in the Rats spinoff and in Season 4.

Williamson, J.N., ed. (1987). Masques II: All-New Stories of Horror and the Supernatural. Baltimore: Maclay & Assoc. ISBN 978-0-940776-24-1. This was an audio book gotten for cheap from a library book sale. I got it because I think rats are cool. I assumed it was a YA-ish book because the cover had drawn rats on it, and the two main characters were like 13 and 10. But this book was flippin' gory and extremely detailed about it! It's about a neighborhood that is situated near a garbage dump that contains bad chemicals that just keep getting covered over with tar mounds-there are a lot of rats that live at the garbage dump. They become a little mutated, and very, very angry. So they go on a killing spree. When I was little I was mostly fascinated by the rats of NIMH and how they came to be. While I still enjoyed that section, this time I was much more focused in Mrs. Frisby's journey and her kindness and determination. She is just a regular mouse but her love is her strength and I was surprisingly very moved by her adventures. It was also nice to revisit old friends like Justin and Jeremy. I did think it was interesting that even in the world of rodents that the males held all the power and made all the decisions. I didn't notice that as a child. So it be even more extraordinary that a older widowed mother mouse is the hero. I was more inclined to think the rats saved the day when I was little. Now I know where the true strength lies.Side note though, and I'm blaming this one on its age: the book is incredibly sexist. If you're a raging feminist, this book is gonna make you mad with all the stereotypes. As he goes through various plans and scenarios, Al is forced to confront difficult things but he’s gradually able to gain some understanding of those around him. An incredibly insightful and moving short story about young lives and the importance of community spirit, tolerance and kindness. When this happens, when a mouse runs past my foot while out in the yard, or, Heaven forbid, comes anywhere near the structure of our house, my screams often sound like the sound effects from the famous shower scene from Psycho. His evidence is, at best, circumstantial – letters and diaries, the artefacts of a life that he says speak to his father’s basic decency. But in spite of himself, Sands hears him out. He finds he likes Horst. He sees him as “gentle and open, seemingly with nothing to hide” and Horst in turn seems to need Sands. He says he brings relief to his “solitude”.
