About this deal

Crossroads was Robert Judd's final film role. He died of stomach cancer in January 1986, two months before the film's theatrical release. The original script ended with Joe Seneca's character dying on a Greyhound bus. [9] Director Walter Hill's father had died shortly before production commenced, and he found filming this scene difficult, so he also shot a happier ending. [9] Both were tested with audiences; the happy ending was chosen. [10] [11] On the Saturday evening we’ll be having a Costume Competition. A chance for fame and kudos for all cosplayers. The guests will act as judges, awarding prizes to those whose efforts they deem to be the best. Whether a participant or viewer, this is always the highlight of any event and lots of fun. MIH then sold the motel toTommy Lancaster ( Terence Rigby) and his family-run Red Ox business in 1987, transforming it into a luxury hotel that was first named The Crossroads Country Hotel, then, The Kings Oak Country Hotel.

An 11th-century homily called De Falsis Deis tells us that Mercury or Odin were honored on crossroads. I was suddenly one of the main characters who’s been in it all the time and of course whereas it could be a bit, you used to get a bit scared in some ways or nervous when it was all the old guard, suddenly it was all the new guard and they were looking at you like you were the old guard and you’ve never gone through it! And when they got rid of Sue, it probably was a toss-up between me and Sue and I think they probably thought “Well, we can get rid of Benny eventually”. Cosplay has always been a popular part of all of our events, and the quality of the costumes on display at our previous events have been breathtaking. There once lived a man named Mercury, who was very deceitful, and, though quite wise in speech, was treacherous in actions and lies. The pagans, in their account, also made him their great god and often and frequently offered him sacrifices at crossroads, through the teachings of the devil, and to high hills they often brought various offerings of praise."

Oh, it’s probably somewhere about, I’ve had hundreds over the years! I mean I used to send them off to charities. There’s one story that I got more for my woolly hat than Edward Heath got for one of his ties! All the little ladies used to knit me them and send them to me. But some of the ones I used to get sent were all colours. (laughs)Other locations included the canal (including Gas Street Basin) behind the studios in Birmingham; in-story this was the King's Oak Canal, on which hairdresser Vera Downend had a boat. The Chateau Impney Hotel also featured numerous times, most famously when Hugh proposed to Meg in 1973, and it was used to hold their wedding party two years later. The Chateau Impney was renamed the Droitwich Hotel on-screen. St Laurence's Church in Alvechurch was the setting for Jill and Adam Chance's wedding in 1983. Hagley Hall was used for the wedding reception. Helios Health Club based in Brierley Hill was used as the location for the Motel Health Club, filmed on Mondays when the health club was closed. I recall there was a storybook character called Clumsy Charlie who made Benny giggle a lot. I think the storyline probably made people aware that there were a lot more people than they realised that had difficulties through one reason or another. I mean Benny could learn to read but nobody had taken the time. I mean don’t forget we still do that now don’t we? You know it was so difficult sometimes, ‘cos I used to not shave probably on a Wednesday morning till Saturday, because we used to film Thursday, Friday because I wanted it more or less the same length which was easier in those days because we just used to shoot the episodes – 1 episode, 2 episode, 3 episode, 4 episode. But of course, when we started filming or shooting out of sequence it was a bit difficult trying to keep it at the same … and make-up never looked the same anyway.

Each one represented one of the families and these tunes could be played separately or, because they shared the same chord sequence, together in counterpoint with each other. … As the budget was small I decided to use a small rhythm section plus a harp and feature the first theme on a 12-string guitar with the second theme played on the oboe. Right at the beginning I put the famous 9-note motif – the call-sign which gets the family in front of the TV set.” But it was one of the hardest things in the world because that was almost impossible to play if you know what I mean! But when you’re in a soap for a while I’m sure every soap actor will say they had storylines that were absolutely ridiculous. But you can’t have great storylines 52 weeks of the year. If you get 2 or 3 in a year, and everyone gets 2 or 3 good storylines, you’ve got a successful soap.Despite the popularity of Crossroads with the viewing public, the show was often criticised by TV reviewers and ridiculed by British comedians. Television historian Hilary Kingsley stated that Crossroads never failed “to provide its critics with ammunition. Some of the acting would have disgraced the humblest of village halls; many of the plots were so farcical they could have been written in a bad dream, and much of the dialogue was pathetic.” The Guinness Book of Classic British TV noted that “ Crossroads was the series that no-one seemed to love. Yet at its peak, it was watched by more viewers than any other soap except Coronation Street.” a b c d Cornell, Paul; Day, Martin; Topping, Keith (1996). What happened was that I was working for the Birmingham rep, across the road, I’d been there for 8 or 9 years, and I was sharing a dressing room with an actor called John Rollason who had just started writing for Crossroads and he suggested me for the part ‘cos he said: “Paul would be able to play it”.
