Scully hits his knee, and Homer responds with an "Ow"... hours later. In addition to the appearances of Mulder and Scully, the episode features several other references to The X-Files.

Amos Graycomb was married to Moselle Graycomb (before the marriage, her maiden name was Moselle Stemple). In his cabinet, he has a secret safe that is hidden underneath a painting that looks almost alike A Bar at the Folies-Bergère by Manet, except the waitress has Burns' head. Inside of the safe, Burns hides his Last Will and a human heart in a jar. Leonard Nimoy, who would later become almost a regular guest, opens the episode with an introduction to this mystery show, telling us the story that happened to a certain bald guy from Springfield.

When the whole of Springfield gathers on the point where the alien appears, the Springfield Elementary band is practicing the Leitmotif from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Devil's Tower (a crucial location in the movie) is also featured on the front of Lisa's Jr. Skeptic. Springfield Estadio de Toros (initially the Duff Beer Krusty Burger Buzz Cola Costington's Department Store Kwik-E-Mart Stupid Flanders Park) Burns has been engaged at least three times: A woman named Gertrude who died of loneliness and rabies, [106] to Jacqueline Bouvier, [107] and to a policewoman named Gloria Jailbird. [17] Though when he tells Homer about Gertrude, he says that he was her fiancé, but he implies that they were married, as he says he missed their wedding, their honeymoon, and their divorce due to working so hard. He was once involved with a fellow student during his time at Yale University named Mimsy Bancroft, and then later had an affair with her daughter, Lily. [12] He once had an affair with Countess von Zeppelin, as he slept with her one time. [108] He also once in love with Marge, and pursued a relationship with her, but stopped once he discovered that Marge was married. Agnes Skinner revealed that she once had an affair with Mr. Burns during the Great Depression ("let him feel me up"). [109] Burns once caught the attention of Selma when she discovers that Burns is single. [110] Family [ ] As evidenced by his role in the series, Burns has owned or co-owned a number of business ventures and companies in Springfield, including the Monty Burns Casino (later demolished), [16] the Little Lisa Recycling Plant, [4] the Burns Slant Drilling Co., [96] Burns Media, [25] the electric company, the water works and even a hotel on Baltic Avenue. [20] He also operated the Burns Germ Warfare Laboratory (which was destroyed by Mona Simpson and a group of protesters). Mulder's FBI badge has a picture of himself only wearing a speedo; this is a reference to a scene in The X-Files episode " Duane Barry", in which Duchovny wore just a speedo. [5]

The tropes are out there:

Mundane Ghost Story: Bart's "ghost story" about how much college will cost for Maggie (which freaks Homer out). In a deleted scene, the original "ghost story" was about the ingredients to an Oscar Meyer weiner (which still freaks out Homer). Charles Montgomery Burns was born to Clifford Burns and Daphne Burns (before the marriage, her maiden name was Daphne Charles (hence Mr. Burns' first name Charles)). In a framing story, Leonard Nimoy is hosting a program about alien encounters, and begins the episode by talking about an "encounter" that occurred in Springfield. Played for Laughs when Homer sees a billboard that reads "DIE" on his way home from Moe's, which he screams at. He screams again when a gust of wind moves a tree branch out of the way, revealing the billboard actually says " DIET".

Book Ends: The episode opens on Leonard Nimoy sitting in shadow before the camera zooms in on him, and ends by zooming away from the Squeaky-Voiced Teen and fading into shadow. The Squeaky-Voiced Teen's ending comment to "Keep watching the skis... uh, skies," is a reference to the final line of dialogue from the 1951 film The Thing from Another World.
