Just a few suggestions, then there are the leftovers that you can use in sandwiches and salads for a few days after. As long as the leftover ham is stored in an airtight container in the fridge, it will be good for 3 days. Another bonus to gammon is just how cheap it is, for a few pounds you can have a few meal’s worth of delicious gammon.

One thing I love about making your own ham is the fact that it can either be a delicious side dishes such as in a salad or with chips and then come Christmas time, it becomes its own delicious recipe and can be served with things such as a gorgeous mustard glaze or with dijon mustard on a platter, it is the perfect base for your favourite glaze. It's really important to build up the glaze, so it really sinks into the ham. Brush half the glaze over the ham roast for about 10 minutes, then brush with the remaining glaze for a further 5 minutes. For an extra sweet touch, rub the ham with 1/4 cup of brown sugar before adding it to the slow cooker. It’s an addition that’s simply divine! It feels special enough to have instead of a Sunday roast or on a special occasion, but it’s so easy I know I’m not going to be slaving over a cooker for hours. In fact, it really is so easy, it’s perfect for children and beginner cooks. For this recipe, there is no need to soak the split peas ahead of cooking as you’ll be slow cooking them for several hours. I do, however, rinse them in cold running water to remove any dirt. How easy is this slow cooker ham and pea soup? Lightly score the ham fat with a knife in a crisscross pattern. Line a small roasting tin with a piece of foil, large enough to come up the sides of the tin. Place the ham on top, fat-side up. If the ham is thinner one end than the other, prop the short end up with a wodge of crumpled kitchen foil, so the fat is more horizontal – this will help it brown more evenly. You absolutely do not need to soak the ham in water to get rid of the salt. It was required when hams were salt cured, but these days it's very mild. If you are concered about the salt content you can use an unsmoked ham instead.

The AF50 ham boiler has the same quality contruction as the AF75 ham boiler but with the added advantage of a remote box containing all the controls.Spiral hams are a convenient option for those leery of carving. Just know spiral hams can dry out faster than other types of ham (even in the slow cooker). Consider ham butt vs. ham shank The first time we made this, I was a bit sceptical as to how it would turn out. It seems like it’s far too simple to taste good. It’s simplicity is what I love about this dish now though. You will find a lot of larger gammon joints at Christmas time. Perfect cooked for Christmas Ham, or served with cheese and meat platter. Put the split peas in a sieve and rinse under cold water. Tip into the slow cooker pot with the vegetables and add the water and mixed herbs. Season with lots of pepper and stir well. Gammon is sold as a raw joint, but it is known as ham or boiled bacon once cooked. You can read more about the differences here. Why Slow Cook Gammon?

Ham Butt: The ham butt is the half that will usually fit best in a slow cook due to its even rounded shape. While this portion may be the easier fit, the butt portion tends to not be as flavorful or moist since it’s leaner than the shank. It is also more difficult to carve into slices since it has two bones running through it. If like me you have a little trouble with the pressure cooker, may sure that you have the pressure release valve closed before you start. In the past, I have had this open and then struggled to work out why it was not coming up to pressure. Just make sure you take care when releasing the pressure, it is hot! You may find that your pressure cooker lid has its own natural pressure release function at the end of cooking time, just read your manual.Put the gammon, onion and 100ml/3½fl oz water in the slow cooker, cover with the lid and cook on low for 6–8 hours, or until the pork is thoroughly cooked. The longer the gammon is cooked, the more like pulled ham it will become. This recipe is for a 750g gammon joint and it takes 30 minutes to cook in the pressure cooker, this cooks it to perfection. How long to cook 1kg gammon joint in a pressure cooker? Split peas are nutritious and a great source of protein and fibre, as well as iron and potassium. They’re also low in fat. So yes, they’re really good for you! Do the split peas need soaking? I prefer unsmoked to smoked gammon but you can use either. If you have a smoked gammon joint you should remove some of the saltiness of the meat before you put it in the slow cooker by boiling it in water for half an hour. What can I make with leftover gammon? There are four main sizes of ham boiler in the Flavasava range, the AF25, AF50, AF75 and AF150 ham boilers.
