About this deal

You won't get the full benefits without a smart thermostat Otherwise the valves cannot communicate with your boiler to turn it on and off, so your radiators will only heat up if the heating is already turned on. This is the set up a lot of homes will have. You can manually set the thermostat temperature, and it will turn the boiler on and off to maintain the temperature of the room it's placed in. The third-party smart TRVs reviewed here all do much the same thing, it is the control thermostat that is the most important choice. The Honeywell EvoHome is suited for much larger properties. All six other thermostats are compatible with the vast majority of heating systems (old and new boilers) and will operate the boiler efficiently based on a learned pattern of when you need heat.

The ability to smartly control the valves. But as we’ve seen, the current integration options are poor. If I could integrate smart valves into an ecobee thermostat, I think I’d run out and buy a full smart heating system. But right now that’s just not possible, so I don’t really see the benefit of having ‘smart’ radiator valves. There’s also a dedicated holiday mode where you input the dates you are away and the application can make sure your house is heated for your return, without using any unnecessary energy while you’re away - which all helps to reduce your bills.

Both Worcester and Vaillant offer their own smart TRVS that are only compatible with their products. Advantages tado are probably the best option for you here. tado’s valves are fairly easy to install – you just unscrew your old TRV, and screw these on instead. You then install the tado app on your phone, and follow the instructions. They have a changeable battery which lasts for around a year. This means you can remotely set the thermostat temperature, and it will turn the boiler on and off to maintain the temperature of the room it's placed in. The Honeywell Evohome delivers brilliantly on its gambit: making zonal temperature control child’s play. If all you’re looking for is a system that allows you total control over the temperature of your house, even when you’re not there, get this one. Neither of the boiler manufacturer's smart TRVs are compatible with home automation devices such as Alexa, IFTTT and Google Home.

What are smart radiator valves? Can they work with your current heating controls? How much are smart TRVs?

Those who want to make a lifestyle change Smart heating empowers you to make changes, giving greater control and transparency on how you heat your home Once you’ve got zonal control of the temperature in your home, you do wonder how you lived without it. Being able to have towels warming in the bathroom for your morning shower while keeping the bedroom cool until you wake up, and then having that room come up to temperature by the time you step out of the shower, is truly amazing. Of course, you can also do this with a thermostatic radiator valve, but a smart valve will also allow you to control things remotely, along with including it in automation routines. For example, you might have a SmartThings routine that detects when you’re coming home, and then carries out a range of actions including opening certain smart radiator valves as required.
