Only the EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b batteries can be charged via USB. The older EN-EL15a and original EN-EL15 batteries cannot be charged via USB. You can update any of these modes by changing anything you like about them, then saving the result at MENU > SETUP MENU (wrench icon) > Save user settings > Save to U1 or U2 > Save Settings.
