The effect will work best if the glaze colour is a similar hue to the basecoat you have chosen, but a couple of shades darker or lighter. Smudge in layers and, once your layer is complete, apply a fixative. Remember that it will not be possible to smudge a layer any further once it is fixed. At lower strengths, Smudge is smoother and softer. This can create gradients, blending shadows and highlights, or smudging pencil drawings. Porous, or ‘thirsty’ surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish.
