About this deal

You hereby irrevocably waive, to the fullest extent permitted by law, (a) any objection that you may now or hereafter have to such jurisdiction and venue and (b) any claim that any such arbitration proceeding has been brought in an inconvenient forum. Note that the preceding provision regarding venue may not apply if you are a consumer based in the European Union, however, in all cases, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods shall not apply in any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms; Scarpa was founded in 1938 in Asolo Italy and over the past 90 years has made climbing and walking footwear. As trail running has become more popular, it was natural for Scarpa to start to make trail running shoes. They recruited Marco De Gasperi, the 6 times World Mountain Running Champion (once as a Junior, five times as a Senior). You've got to assume the GTX version weighs at least a little more than the unlined original, but I can't offer you direct comparison since Scrapa's weight figures online refer to different sizes. For the waterproof shoe they say 520g for a pair of size 38 (presumably this is the women's version since men's starts at 40 in the UK), while my much larger pair of size 47 weigh considerably more at 764g. Still I'd consider this midweight for a shoe, certainly not outrageous for a long day on your feet given the cushioning and support on offer (to say nothing of the waterproof membrane).

The diagonal zipper here is offset, and not resting directly on the bones on the top of your feet. The gaiter material is Polartec Windbloc, which promises a balance of water resistance and breathability. Both testers found that to be the case out on the trail. Stretch fabric ankle collar incorporated with a minimal stretch tongue provides gentle wrapping and support, reducing bulk and enhancing fit, and seals out trail debris. Another reason they feel a little larger is because of their wide fit, particularly across the forefoot. This is accompanied by quite a high volume around the midfoot. If you've historically had trouble finding shoes that fit your wide, chunky feet then these will potentially be the holy grail you've been looking for.The SCARPA Ribelle Run Kalibra G runs far more pleasantly on moderate terrain than either tester expected, given their burly sole. They roll naturally and are plush enough to push the mileage. The gaiters are not restricting in the slightest. The Ribelle Run GORE-TEX trail running shoe is for those who are looking for absolute precision and high adaptability on any degree of difficulty or type of terrain. It is designed for short to medium distance trail and skyrunning. This lightweight, high performance shoe is perfect for athletes who are seeking sensitivity and precision on rough, technical terrain.

Juggernaut” (SCARPA’s term) is an appropriate word to describe the Ribelle Run Kalibra G. It’s a burly shoe that’s hungry for challenging terrain. SCARPA’s designers were clearly inspired by mountaineering footwear like their Ribelle Tech 2.0 and Phantom series. Currently only full European sizes are available in the UK and there is a size conversion to be aware of. There is about ¾ of a UK size between European sizes. The Ribelle Run fit a bit on the big side. I have a Euro 46 and usually wear a Euro 46.5 in most brands. In my experience the Ribelle Run size half a Euro size larger than most running brands, so I would suggest trying half a size smaller than you usually use. Usually, we try to get 150 miles on a shoe before writing a review. Due to factories being closed because of Covid infection we had a longer 6 months to test run the shoes. That means we can write a bit more about the durability of the Ribelle Run. Please note that certain state laws do not allow limitations on implied warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. If you are a resident of such a state and these laws apply to you, some or all of the above disclaimers, exclusions, or limitations may not apply to you, and you may have additional rights. Both Mary and Bergen tested these shoes all over in the Colorado snow, both on maintained trails and off-trail. Wearing these comfortable, secure shoes before they needed to strap on skis or crampons was huge.

BOA® WRAP 360

There’s another new Italian winter trail runner competing for gold this season: the La Sportiva Cyklon Cross GTX, which GearJunkie reviewed late last year. The Cyklon Cross and the Kalibra have a lot in common. In fact, the average runner might have trouble finding any differences between the two from the outside. They both have an integrated BOA system, zippered gaiter, and big outsole lugs. Whilst I'm aware looks aren't everything, there's no denying that the TPU thermal bonded uppers look seriously, seriously cool and that the Ribelle Run is - at least cosmetically speaking - a truly stunning looking shoe. On a more practical level, the bonded uppers offer good abrasion resistance - exactly what you want for a technical shoe, which is destined to get a good scuffing. It also sheds mud pretty effectively, with very few seams that grains of grit can make their way into and work away at the weaknesses within. From a design standpoint, the shoes have some significant differences. The Kalibra’s gaiter (which Bergen much preferred) is about an inch taller and comes with a secure closure strap at the top. The Cyklon Cross zipper, in comparison, has a tendency to creep downward. Our women’s tester adjusting the zipper and the cuff on the Ribelle Run Kalibra G; (photo/Katherine Murphy)

Mary didn’t experience any wet feet during her testing of the SCARPA Kalibra G, either. So, while the holes under the BOA knobs look like exposed openings in the gaiters, they seem to seal up just fine during use. And that wasn’t the first time the SCARPA Ribelle Run Kalibra G winter trail shoes impressed Bergen.

Your Consent: SCARPA may disclose and use your personal information any time that you consent to such disclosure of use. That makes a big difference. Heel lift, which often plagues other BOA footwear, is a non-issue for the SCARPA Ribelle Run. Lightweight, breathable mesh with overlays of thermally welded PU film and translucent ripstop holds foot securely in place and provides support and protection. Climbing inspired TPU rand encircles the perimeter of the shoe providing 360 degree support and protection. The two shoes have an entirely different character on the trail. The Cyklon Cross felt more like a traditional running shoe. It has a more flexible and softer midsole that lent itself to longer runs. The SCARPA Ribelle Run Kalibra was burlier, stiffer, and offered more support in technical conditions. Hoka Speedgoat: The cushioning is a bit softer but, you lose the feel for the floor. So, the Speedgoat doesn’t feel as nimble as the Ribelle Run. The Speedgoat is a bit more bouncy in feel. Here is our Speedgoat review: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/hoka-one-one-speedgoat-evo-review/ Altra Lone Peak: A more natural feel to the ride with a broad rounded toe box: https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/altra-lone-peak-5-review/
