About this deal

Whilst the national scheme calls itself the ‘hidden disabilities sunflower lanyard scheme, UCL is using the term invisible disabilities. We are proud of the diverse make-up of our university and would not want anyone to feel they should hide who they are. Where did the sunflower lanyard come from? When did this start? The St John Ambulance First Aid Badge is to be worn only as a “base-line” badge on the brassard and in one of the 2 spaces where the MV Badge or Marksmanship Badge has not been gained. When more than one badge is authorised, the Flying Scholarship or Cadet Navigator badge is worn centrally 1cm above the Gliding badge, the bottom edge of the Gliding badge is to be worn 1cm above the lower edge of the patch. The Bandsman’s badge is worn on the brassard, in a central position 75 mm above the lower edge. Bandsman’s badges are only worn in this space where higher priority badges have not been gained.

The MV badge is to be positioned on the Brassard 6mm from the lower edge and 6mm in from the left hand edge. Need help or advice? While the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is gaining momentum all the time, we still have a long way to go to ensure full accessibility for disabled people, and it starts with removing the stigma associated with disabilities and health conditions of all kinds. I’m open about my disabilities, but I’m aware that not everyone is in a position to be.

The 'Hidden Disabilites Campaign' is run by 'Sunflower Holding Limited'. This company aim to make travel and public spaces more accessible using these simple lanyards. Since it's launch in 2016, businesses from every sector have been joining the global Sunflower network - ranging from retail, tourism, and transport - including over 200 airports, railway networks, coach and bus services and ferries, education (universities, schools and colleges), healthcare, central and local government agencies to football teams, theme parks, theatres and financial institutions. This badge is to be located in a central position on the brassard immediately below the Air Cadet Leadership badge or with the base of the badge 7.5 cn above the lower edge of the brassard if the Leadership badge is not worn. If the Corps Marksmanship badge is worn the Nijmegen badge is to be moved to a balancing position on the left side of the brassard, on a line with the crown of the Marksmanship badge, and with the bases of both badges 7.5 cm above the lower edge of the brassard. The distinguishing badge (Air Training Corps) is to be worn centrally on the brassard, immediately below the identification badge. I wear one because I’m autistic and type 1 diabetic. The reason it’s so helpful for my autism is because I’ve learned to ‘mask’ my autistic traits so well over the years that I often pass as neurotypical. This can put me in humiliating, or even dangerous, situations when I start acting in unexpected ways. For example, if I’m overwhelmed and I start stuttering or losing speech altogether, or if I start pacing or fidgeting, or if I have to leave a situation at an unexpected time. The lanyard takes a lot of pressure off, as I don’t have to worry so much about what people think of me and whether they assumed I was being rude, so I can just focus on getting myself to a place of comfort or safety. When only one of these badges is worn, it is to be worn centrally, 1cm above the lower edge of the patch. Air Cadet Distinguishing and Training badges are to be worn as stated below. Unauthorised badges or insignia are not to be worn on Air Cadet uniform. Badges on the Brassard Yes. The sunflower lanyard has been in use in airports and some supermarkets for a few years now and so you may already have a lanyard. There is no difference between the one's airports and some supermarkets provide and the ones UCL are providing, so if you already have one just use that. For example, they can be used to keep separate volunteer groups of different responsibilities and duties.Cpl, Sgt, FS and CWO badges are to be worn on the shoulder straps of either the jersey or the shirt, depending on the mode of dress. Cadet Flying Badges Schools can easily use them as an incentive to reward successful students. This is because the colour yellow will attract more attention compared to other colours. In addition, yellow has a strong visual impact on students' emotions, making them feel happy when they see it since it's associated with pleasant sunny weather, especially in springtime.
