One layer creates a kind of neutral summer lip that’s a warmed up version of your favourite nude. But if you layer 2 or more coats, you can create a vivid coral lip. They feel really nourishing and comfortable on the lips and have no heavy feel. It feels almost like a water-gel, or an essence. You can tailor the finish to what you want, so you could go for a smudgy stain, or layer up for something more glossy with deeper colour payoff.

Some of the shades are sheerer than others. For example 610 is a lovely sheer nude, whereas 612 gives a much bolder opaque finish. In fact, 612 is the most opaque option out of the shades I was sent. I love them both. Where is YSL Water Stain available in the UK?is more of a coral-red than a coral-pink. It’s another great option for anyone scared of red lips, and have a warm undertone. Create a blush of colour with one layer, or up the ante with a few more coats to create a soft, red lip. If you’re purely looking for an orange-coral, go for 605, or for a pink coral, you’ll need 604. Vague De Rouge is raspberry red, but when you build up the layers, the colour transforms into a vibrant cherry tone. Top tip: To remove the lip stain we recommend using an oil-based makeup remover specifically for eyes and lips and using a cotton pad gently wipe away the stain. With a name like flot de fuchsia, which translates to flowing fuschia, you’d expect 608 to be a bright pink shade from the way it applies, but to my delight, it’s not; it’s the most beautiful pink-red that is the best shade for anyone who wants to wear red, but hasn’t built up the confidence to yet. Again, apply one layer for a pop of pink, or add extra layers for a brighter finish. These versatile lip stains offer three different levels of coverage that are adjustable according to how much you apply. For light coverage, opt for one layer using the applicator; start at the cupids bow in the centre of the lips moving towards the outer corners, then reverse the movement. For medium coverage, wait around 20 seconds, then use the sharp edge of the applicator to retrace the lips and carefully reapply. For intense full coverage (after letting the first two layers dry), deliver a third layer, paying extra attention to the centre of the lower lip to amp up the intensity.
