In the movie Delia ( played by Schitt's Creek's Catherine O'Hara) and Charles are married and Delia is Lydia's stepmother. In the musical Delia is Lydia's life coach who is secretly sleeping with Charles - later becoming engaged. Finally there is an extra 2 minute scene at the end were we see Lydia riding her bike home from school and her parents talking to Jane on the phone telling her they do not want to sell the house. The character of Betelgeuse—envisioned by McDowell as a winged demon, who takes on the form of a short Middle Eastern man—is also intent on killing the Deetzes rather than scaring them, and wanted sex from Lydia instead of marriage. In another version of the script, the film concludes with the Maitlands, Deetzes, and Otho conducting an exorcism ritual that destroys Betelgeuse and the Maitlands transforming into miniature versions of themselves and moving into Adam's model of their home, which they refurbish to look like their house before the Deetzes moved in.
