About this deal

From August 2014, the show was co-presented by Abell and LBC's Petrie Hosken. In January 2015, he was given his own show from 8 am to 10 am on Sundays. From April 2016, Abell moved to the afternoon slot on Sundays of 3 pm to 6 pm. Previously he worked as a detective in the heart of the city, and his last case definitely made him want something different. Moving into Little Sky definitely gave home something different to what he was used to and I think Jake was extremely grateful for that respite. It’s not long before he finds that a woman died in the small village a decade earlier under mysterious circumstances. When he brings the subject up with the locals, they close shop and don’t want to discuss it at all. Some even start to warn him off about digging up the past.

I loved the uncomplicated setting (English country side), the characters and Jake’s introverted quest for isolation, books and music. Of course, all of this are interrupted by a decade old mystery that Jake just can’t leave alone. I’d call this book a cosy thriller, the first half of the book was definitely slower than the second half however that didn’t take away from the storyline. I loved learning about this quiet community that Jake found himself living in. I loved meeting all of the locals too, some good and some not so good. What I absolutely loved the most was the imagery, seriously, I could see Jake rambling around his acres of land and imagine every single step he took and what he was seeing, I love an author that gets that right.

We first meet Jake as he walks for miles searching for his late uncles property, Arthur had left this to Jake in his will and as Jakes marriage wasn’t doing great he decided to move there for some peace and quiet. The isolated setting worked well, although it was fairly unbelievable that you could have a whole house and modern extension, with some modern fittings, without any kind of access road or lane. There seemed to be no issue with vehicles travelling across anybody’s land (and the locals are hardly amenable.) Furthermore, there is a nice homage to famous detective novels of the past in the use of their character names as places and landmarks in and around Little Sky. Thank you to @instabooktours for hosting, @harperfictionpr for my copy and @thestigabell for the descriptive setting, strong character building and for introducing me to a slow burn detective series! 🔍❓ This book was so well written, I enjoyed the setting of the scene, it seemed beautifully idyllic and such a relaxing escape, until it isn’t. The character building was strong and well thought out.

This is the line that broke me: "a soft, biscuitty smell on her clothes." Full body cringe, gag-reflex activated. Awful, florid, excessively cute, I hate it. And the thing is, that was one of the less egregious examples! It's just one that stood out. Biscuitty. Soft. A soft, biscuitty smell. Aaargh. All this green, all this prettiness, the quiet of the river.. you realise its a hard place to make a life sometimes.’ Ik wil World of Thrillers en uitgeverij HarperCollins bedanken dat ik dit boek, Dodelijke afloop van Stig Abell, mocht lezen voor een review. Life in the middle of nowhere is everything Jake could wish for. His home is beautiful and his surroundings are stunning. While the locals are eccentric, they are also friendly, and invite him to join their annual treasure hunt.

We have a love interest as well that bulks the book out and some very stereotypical nasty villager types. Stig Abell loves detective novels above any other literature, films, plays or television. This is the first one he has actually written. Away from books, he presents the breakfast show on Times Radio, a station he helped to launch in 2020. Before that he was a regular presenter on Radio 4’s Front Row and was the editor and publisher of the Times Literary Supplement. At one time or another he has written for almost every newspaper in Britain, and one or two in America as well. He lives in London with his wife, three children and two independent-minded cats called Boo and Ninja (his children named them, obviously). In March 2014, Abell started co-presenting a show on LBC Radio alongside Sky News television presenter Kay Burley from 8am to 11am on Sundays. Burley was the main presenter while Abell reviewed the papers and added political comment.PDF / EPUB File Name: Death_Under_a_Little_Sky_-_Stig_Abell.pdf, Death_Under_a_Little_Sky_-_Stig_Abell.epub A thriller with the difference that the detective really didn't want to detect. He wanted peace and quiet. The village has very little. A general store, which doubles as a bar. A church, but no vicar. No school and not much of anything else, while Jake's new house has a magnificent library and a lake, but no bathroom or washing machine. Gradually, he begins to get to know his surroundings and the few locals. Livia, the local vet, Dr Peter, an elderly biologist, Sarah at 'The Jolly Nook,' and a host of vaguely hostile, insular locals, mainly consisting of recalcitrant matrons and aggressive farmhands. I enjoyed this one to a point. It did seem a bit confused about what it wanted to be. Starts as a mystery thriller then veers into cosy thriller, a sort of self discovery book and a romance novel. The end I thought was a bit of a let down and a bit hard to swallow.
