About this deal

As a counterpoint, the little girl with the bow in her hair and the dress behaves like a spoilt brat, with no empathy for Davey who has lost his precious toy. This little girl is a Spoilt Brat Trope, drawn to pretty and new things, and therefore assuaged with the promise of owning a brand new teddy bear. It does concern me slightly that the spoilt brat trope is usually a girl dressed like this which — Bella notwithstanding — can sometimes morph into femme phobia. This is a minor concern.

One of my favourite children's books. It made me feel so warm and fuzzy after, I wish I had a sibling who would have done that for me! Her family said the writer had 'gained an enormous amount of pleasure from reading your messages' and asked for people to share their favourite stories or pictures she created.

Lucy Mangan in Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading says that now that she's a mom, she cries every time she reads this. I can see why. And the pictures are absolutely fantastic, so lively and expressive and lovely.

So pleased to see this book on the list recommended by Julia Donaldson. My children loved this book when they were younger (now 17 and 21). I "taped" myself reading it so that they could listen to it when I couldnt be there at bedtime and they heard it over and over again. Its a great story of the selfless love that can exist within families. The illustrations are beautiful and Shirley Hughes is an incredible story teller. Her stories are timeless... It is therefore a cause for much dismay when after collecting his sister Bella from school, Dave realises that Dogger is no longer with him. In fact, he has no idea where he is! Despite Bella’s kindness in lending him a teddy, nothing can replace Dogger. Shirley Hughes manages to capture the simplicity and sincerity of a child’s love for his favourite toy through her narrative and illustrations; a love that many people can relate to. The conflict-resolution plot gives the perfect sense of catharsis for the child reader and turns this book into a must-read. Author and illustrator Shirley Hughes OBE was the first ever Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award winner. She wrote and illustrated over 200 cherished children’s books, including the celebrated Alfie stories. Council bosses say Government plans to house migrants at former Dambusters RAF base are 'unlawful' and should be quashedI was so happy to see this book on your 100 best books list. It was my favourite story as a child and I recently bought a new copy for my own children to enjoy. A tale of loss and also unexpected but pure sisterly love. This enchanting tale follows the love affair between a boy, Dave, and his most treasured possession, his toy dog, Dogger.
