To achieve the best possible image quality, set your camera to 1080p, 30fps, 160 FOV with zero zoom. Ideal conditions are outdoors in natural light, and when filming indoors or at night make sure you set the camera to the 'low-light' scene mode in the Video Settings menu. After 29 minutes of video recording, the Ghost-S will close the file in progress, and automatically open a new one - you won't have to start the recording again manually. This is a result of the file size limitations on MicroSD cards. A uniform 29 minute file duration means that the break in your video will be consistent and predictable, rather than changing each time you alter your settings. It is not possible to change the maximum video duration. While the Ghost XL Pro offers plenty of mounting options, it doesn’t offer quite so many advanced features. There is a screen, although it’s a mono LCD rather than a full-blown colour touch screen.

Drift has also added new scene modes: Normal, Vivid, or Low Light. Normal gives you more natural colors that are easier to work with if you want to adjust color to your liking when editing. Vivid pumps up colors so they pop, while Low Light seems to increase noise reduction, though not so much that subjects turn to mush. In use, it performs well with the large buttons and beep, enabling you to easily operate the camera even if you can’t directly see it. The remote, which you can strap onto your wrist using the included wrist strap, pairs easily with the Ghost-S, and you can use it to start and stop recording as well as take still, time-lapse, and burst photos. A wireless remote is also included with the HD Ghost, and can be worn around your wrist using the included strap. There are two buttons, Record and Stop, and multicolored LEDs that indicate recording state. It's a nice inclusion, as you can confirm recording status without having to look at the camera itself.

Please note that selecting a 127 or 90 degree field of view in the video settings menu will cause a slight decrease in image quality. This will digitally crop the image, resulting in a slight drop in resolution. The zoom feature will have a similar effect - this is a digital zoom and so unlike an optical zoom the further you zoom in the more grain you'll experience. Audio quality is fine, but for action videos you're probably going to want to turn the mic off anyway, or you'll be capturing a lot of wind noise. For still subjects, the built-in mic did a decent job, and it offers three levels of sensitivity adjustment. And you can always directly plug in a better external mic, which you can't do with many other cameras.When it comes to using the Drift Ghost XL is one of my favourite cameras. It’s easy to understand and operate, and most importantly, the quality of the video matches the quality of use. Keeping with the waterproof features, a waterproof adapter enables you to connect to accessories such as a mic or external power source. This I like as it means that you can mount and essentially not have to worry about the power going to the camera or record a voice-over through the action if required, perfect if you’re thinking about a bit of rally driving! You also have the advantage over all other action cameras: it doesn’t have to be level, either the right way up or upside down; you twist the lens to get the horizon correct.
