About this deal

As promised I put these into my Xiaomi mix 3 5 g smartphone. My first attempt was not too successful. The sound had to be put up to full volume and was not too pleasant to be perfectly honest with you. the simply didn't feel like there was quite enough juice in my phone to run these properly.

HIFIMAN HE-400i 2020 Review - Headfonia Reviews

Are there better sounding headphones out there? Yes sure. But you will spend way more money for a little bit of gain. But that is just my opinion and the complain box is already full. I think our experiences are actually similar. I did not use a Schiit Lyr in my testing, and I have heard that planar magnetic headphones perform better when they are amped. However, I tested both headphones with a pretty good on-board sound card and a cheap FiiO A1 portable amp, neither of which had a problem powering either headphone. On a side note, I could power the HE-400i with my cell phone, but the DT880 needed the portable amp Great review! I see that you mentioned the connectors, just to be clear, are they still the same? I got forza cables for my he-400 and would like to reuse them if I get the 400i. Oh btw what about these paired with the dark voice amp? The general tonal balance of the HE400i is classic Hifiman with a neutral slightly warm sound , good extension to both ends and a little excessive energy at the treble. These headphones will let you know if your source is good or not. I won't repeat much of the pros and cons of this headphone that hasn't already been said. Frequency response of course doesn't tell the whole story and in the case of the Sundara we get a way more refined sound with a better articulated and layered bass , greater dynamics and a more holographic scene with a more physical presentation of the venue. As for the distortions we saw in the graphs, I could tell you that I hear them but I am not sure at all. The highs sound a bit shrill at moderate levels. Turning the levels up accentuates this. But this could just be me not trying to EQ above 8 kHz. A shelving filter may help there. if only it has more bass than it is, I’d recommend it to people more. But for now it’s a bit more niche IMO, maybe on that regard the 2020 ver is the more mainstream one. The pads are also of good quality. My pair came with the newer version focus pads (Focus pad A’s). I believe the older versions were a bit thinner, but mine are very plush and comfortable. They don’t feel like memory foam, but are quite soft and feel decent.

My story is short and hope you can help me. Currently I own a pair of HD 598. I like it, but something is missing. Thus, an upgrade is necessary. After almost a week of research I oscilate between HiFiMan 400i and Oppo PM-3. Of course I took into consideration HD 650 even HD 700, but the dac/amp requirements are too high for me. On my table is just an Asus Xonar U7.As we said, the sound is open and airy. Hans Zimmer's majestic orchestral score for "Man of Steel" projected a bigger more expansive sound over the HE-400i than the P7. Instruments are clearly articulated and easily distinguished from each other. The mid-range is forward yet warm and and the headphones really excelled with albums such as the Punch Brothers' "The Phosphorescent Blues." There are two types of neutral tuning of the midrange though – the one is boring, somehow lifeless and almost dead-sounding. The second one, which you can find in here is full, vivid and pleasant, without sounding too forward or dominating. But I don’t mind noisy vinyl recordings. Makes me feel nostalgic about old days. They feel natural and true. But as was said here – my only fear is that I’m missing out on something by buying something inferior or cheaper. Hence the attempts to find some ground. Good quality without spending a lot on something I can’t yet appreciate fully

The midrange pretty much continues what the bass has started. It is wonderfully neutral, uncolored in any way. It is neither dark nor bright, warm or cold, analytical nor musical. It is flat but in a very good way.Would my X3&E12 combo be a good enough source for the HE-400i? i am using it with the Fidelio L2 and i’ve been very pleased with the result so far, i was thinking of upgrading to the HE-400i..or the X2.. I'm pretty new to the headphone world. I already have a sony mdr 1000x, BeoPlay H6 and Marshall Major v1. Have used a laptop or mobile phone as a source. At the end of this week I also get the Topping dx3 pro which I will use on the headphones. Last but not least let's not forget that the Deva can be easily transformed to a high quality bluetooth headphone with the addition of the extra BlueMini. The Y-cable attaches to the left and right earcups via gold-plated connectors. The gold not only adds a bit of design flair, but it also enhances long-term electrical performance since gold connectors never corrode. The bulky cable should last longer than skinnier wires, and it's also easy to replace yourself if it ever breaks. X3 as source certainly is good enough and the E12 has more than enough power. I think it owuld work better with the X2, the HE400i might prefer a more detailed amp with a bigger sound stage like the Duet or Vorzuge
