I have to admit that I was concerned going into this one as it's set in the 1960s and I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction... (although there's a debate about what counts as historical and to me it's before 1980, how about you?) However, I loved it so much more than I thought I would! I can always rely on Katie to create and develop beautifully drawn characters who just work perfectly in whatever situation she places them in. The chemistry between Meg and Justin is undeniable, but they are both late to the realisation party as Meg follows her dreams to work in France. Alexander ,'we all loved it at the time , now it seems desperately gloomy and and needs repair and decoration.'. Katie Fforde writes with an easy style that engages the reader - though the first part of this one didn’t catch me, I had to work a little to engage with the characters. Some of the dialogue was clunky, and maybe that was something to do with the, unusual for her, 1960s setting (rampant sexism, smoking, short skirts etc etc). The grumpy love interest remained a bit of a mystery to me, but I enjoyed their slow coming together. The bigger plot about a rundown Dorset hotel was fun, a bit fairytale-like, and very cosy. The only problem I had with it was in the age of the ‘old lady’, and 1964 only being 19 years from 1945… was she in her late forties/fifties in the war? Or did I miss something? This is the first time I've ever read anything by Katie Fforde, although I am of course familiar with the name and the kind of books she writes. When Meg's mother, Louise, called and asked for help, Meg couldn't refuse. Louise was working at a beautiful Georgian hotel set in the equally beautiful Nightingale Woods in sleepy Dorset. The hotel owner had died and one of his his sons, Andrew, who Louise had more than a passing acquaintance with, had gone to France to sort out his estate, Meg was to take over the kitchen, she didn't know if she was up to this but the hotel didn't have many guests and the staff were brilliant. I loved this book so much that I devoured it in a day and a half. The characters were very well rounded and you instantly become invested in the storyline, the characters, and the beautiful old hotel.'Meg's friends are just darlings, they are so available and accomodating. Although honestly, I'd say I felt that at some parts (especially around the 60-75% sections), that they were perhaps *too available*to help her-- It sounds rather terrible of me to complain about reliable friends, but they were almost too-present to help should the need arise, given at such short notice and no matter the distance. It's just too good to be true. But yeah, it's fiction, and we are allowed to have super friends who can rearrange their plans to help you. But I guess as a reader, the down side of that is that you get used to the fact that they were ever present in her life, and you get complacent in a way that you never truly fear for Meg's challenges. Without a doubt, Meg is definitely the one who was destined for a future in food. Creating beautiful dishes at the cookery school, she also appeared in A Wedding in Provence with a showstopper cake that proved to be far superior to anything that a local pâtissier could produce. This really is a problem for me because it could have been mentioned that it was Book 3 in a series, even though it could and should be a standalone story – and the story does stand up very well by itself. Or it would if it didn't fall down on the number of characters. If you're looking for a novel that will take you on an enchanting journey, look no further than Katie Fforde’s One Enchanted Evening. As expected, there is a happy ending which ties everything together nicely - it was enjoyable to witness Meg's journey come full circle by the end of the book. And guess what? OEE was a chance for Hannah and me to attempt another buddy read. (Psst, epic fail as usual… *snorts* but we do have fun with our messages.) It’s Spring 1966, Dorset. On reading this book, it's easy to see why Katie has had such a great writing career; One Enchanted Evening is a book which many many people will enjoy. And what an enchanting evening it was!First published in 1995, this was to mark an introductory effort by Katie Fforde that was to be warmly received by her many readers and critics. Featuring much of her now trademarked style and wit, it’s written in a light-hearted and easily accessible style that allows both casual and committed readers alike to delve right in. That’s not to say there isn’t substance there, as the tone and ambiance of the novel convey a realistic portrayal of the characters throughout that’s instantly relatable. Among the Characters, I love the play on "found family" trope going among the staff of Nightingale Woods. I rooted for Meg, Ambroisine, Susan and her many relations. I find that they have great team work. Step into the world of Katie Fforde where love, romance and the happiest of happy endings are just around the corner. The new novel by the number one bestselling author and queen of feel-good romance. Meg falls in love with the hotel, despite the fact it needs some work doing on it, none of the rooms have bathrooms, the decor is dated. But it’s not long before Meg starts having ideas as to what they can do to get more visitors, because close by is a hotel with much more updated facilities. Can they keep the hotel running or will it have to be sold? Then there is Meg and Justin could there be another romance or not? Katie Fforde does an excellent job of painting beautiful descriptions of scenery throughout the story - readers will feel like they're right there with Meg whether she is in the delightful Dorset countryside or the rolling hills of Provence.
