About this deal

It's a subtle difference but I think the OD9 is slightly smoother and darker than the Pro+. The Pro+ is probably a better pedal and more versatile but I like the OD9 the way it is. It's definitely better than the Ibanez pedals. Don't get it modded because it will screw it up. For those who can't get enough of the original Ibanez Tube Screamer, there are multiple options at different price points that you can get your hands on today.

also, if you get an 808 or TS9 etc etc from whoever some are relay switched, some are TB, whole myriad. for the relay switched ones, this little item to convert them to TB without drilling holes is supposed to be good. I have an OD9 and OD820. I always use the OD820, but sometimes break out the OD9. I have had mine for 3 years but don't use it as much as my OD820, but I still have kept it around so long because it's such a great pedal. It's the best.Long story short ... this unassuming OD808 was the winner. The Ibanez TS Mini was last place and the fancy, ridiculous expensive TS808HW was somewhere in the unremarkable middle. One of the most versatile takes on a TS808 design. It sports 2 channels, with a B option for channel 1. Bandwidth acts as a mode selector, ranging from thinner, lower gain sounds to fatter, higher-gain ones. Voice selects between clipping diode modes. A selectable buffer and normal/bright modes round out the tonal options. For those who want only the very best overdrive tones emanating from their 'board, Ibanez has produced (and continues to produce) hand-wired versions of the TS808. The limited edition Ibanez TS808HW – whilst also acting as an investment for players who want to see their money put to good use – provides an impressive tone which delivers on all of the TS808-sounding promises. Whether it sounds that much better we'll never know – but it's worth getting hold of one if your bank account will allow. Maxon built the original TS808 for Ibanez – the first edition of the series. Identical to the original circuit and featuring the JRC4558 IC chip, the Maxon OD808 reissue offers the smooth, natural, and incredibly dynamic overdrive of a full-up tube amplifier in a compact pedal.

The lists in this article were last updated on June 5th, 2023 The Best Selling Overdrive of All Time The tone is another potential reason as to why a clone would suit you better than the original pedal. If you're all about the mid-bump and Tube Screamer style of overdrive, but want something that has more gain, a slightly different gain voicing or just more tweakable options, then a clone is probably the way to go. Remember though, that all Tube Screamer clones will have a fairly similar tone, layout and gain structure, as they're all variations on the same theme. Which brands make the best Tube Screamer clones? The main volume, drive and tone controls – while fairly self-explanatory – offer the user a pretty vast range of tones to work with. Finding your favorite tone on the Bonsai is surprisingly difficult, which is mostly down to the abundance of choice, but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience altogether. Imagine having a pedalboard full of TS-style pedals – including some of the most rare, sought after options on the market. It’s a real treat. Maxon developed the OD808 circuit more than 40 years ago, and since then it’s become the most used, most imitated and most lauded overdrive circuit of all time. While the 808-style overdrive circuit is commonplace nowadays, in 1979 it was a unique design and an industry first. The third thing to choose is the tone and clipping set-up. Of course, the one thing that Tube Screamers almost universally have in common is their 'mid bump' and soft-clipping diodes.Personally I swear by the Klon(e) build by our Juansolo, just like many here do. It also is an overdrive, but one without that mid character. It takes the signal, makes it louder, adds treble and gain, all to taste, without touching the rest. Very tranparent pedal, great sounds and almost all settings are great. It is THE more pedal. Gives you more of all the good stuff. It really has that mojo to me. According to Godlyke (distributors of the Maxon OD-808), the circuit is identical to the original units produced in the ’70s that are also identical to the Ibanez TS-808. It may be fair to say then that the reissue Maxon OD808 sounds closest to what the original OD808 and Ibanez TS-808 units did when they were first released in the ’70s. (**12/23/01 EDITOR’s NOTE: I’ve examined the OD-808 and discovered that the output resistors are truly the same as those found in the TS-9: therefore the circuit matches the original and reissue TS-9 except for inclusion of the JRC4558D chip rather than the TS-9 reissue’s Toshiba chip**).

If you're searching for a modern take on the Tube Screamer, then there are literally thousands of brands all making cool modern-voiced pedals. JHS and EarthQuaker Devices are two of the most popular, and their TS-inspired pedals don't leave much to be desired. They can cover virtually all bases, especially when it comes to modernizing that Tube Screamer tone we love.Honestly though as stated above by tekbow the differences between these pedals is slight. If you are happy/unhappy with your TS9 I doubt you are going to more/less so with an OD-808
