The Sunday Times - Crime and Thriller Book of the Month ‘Stephenson was a doctor before he was a writer, and the best part of this moody thriller, a slow-burning investigation into a spate of unexplained deaths at an underfunded London hospital, is its authoritative, unsparing account of what it’s like to work in such a place.’ In 2019, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia ranked as the 7th leading cause of death. Women are disproportionately affected. Globally, 65% of deaths from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are women.

In a review of 13 relevant studies, scientists found that people with diabetes were nearly 3.7 times more likely to have a critical case of COVID-19 or to die from the disease compared with COVID-19 patients without any underlying health conditions (including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or respiratory disease), they reported online April 23 in the Journal of Infection. Knowing death may be near is often difficult to deal with or comprehend. Signs a person is close to dying include decreased appetite, vital sign changes, weakness, and increased sleeping. The book is made up of chapters forwarding the current narrative mystery (patients are being murdered in a hospital, who is doing it?) and chapters about historical healthcare workers who hurt people. The way it worked for me, the historical chapters provided this slurry of potential motivations to think about as I was evaluating the current mystery and who did it. I can’t think of another book I’ve read with that structure, it felt fresh. As a person approaches death, they become less active. This means their body needs less energy than it did. They stop eating or drinking as much, as their appetite gradually reduces. A recent study, posted March 31 to the preprint database bioRxiv, proposed a more speculative explanation as to why COVID-19 hits smokers harder. The preliminary research has not yet been peer-reviewed, but early interpretations of the data suggest that smoke exposure increases the number of ACE2 receptors in the lungs — the receptor that SARS-CoV-2 plugs into to infect cells. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish this book - it’s clear the author has medical knowledge, which is great, but the book felt a little too technical at times. It felt very slow and I wanted to get to at least 30%, but honestly I’ve been trying to read this for about three days now and haven’t been able to make much progress.

What The Fluffer Butter Nutter?! Flappin' Turkeys! You all already know that thrillers are genre to read, but when it comes to medical thrillers / suspense - that's my absolute favourite kryptonite! And this book completely & totally nailed it! Think the 90's show, ER, but with a suspenseful thriller twist in a book. I cannot believe how I sailed through this divinely yummy medical conundrum! Spine-tingling with an injection of fear. The witty writing, quirky protagonist, and anecdotal descriptions of real-life medical villains combine to make Sometimes People Die a delightful read. I loved it.’There are many different beliefs about what happens after death, but those nearby may sense that consciousness has left. Choosing the moment to die

It can sometimes appear that people choose the moment to die. For example, people talk about someone hanging on until a relative arrives at their bedside, or until a special anniversary or birthday. A person who is confused, drowsy or unconscious may also wake up and be able to say a final goodbye before dying. If you are alone with the person and would like someone else to be with you when they die or afterwards, you could call a friend or family member. Several early studies have suggested a link between obesity and more severe COVID-19 disease in people. One study, which analyzed a group of COVID-19 patients who were younger than the age of 60 in New York City, found that those who were obese were twice as likely as non-obese individuals to be hospitalized and were 1.8 times as likely to be admitted into critical care. If you are feeling suicidal it is likely that you have felt increasingly hopeless and worthless for some time. You may not know what has caused you to feel this way but it is often a combination of factors. Struggling to cope with certain difficulties in your life can cause you to feel suicidal. These difficulties may include:In seeing these patterns emerge, scientists developed several theories as to why COVID-19 might hurt both damaged hearts and healthy ones, according to a Live Science report.
