Vax's newest Blade 3 and 4 cordless models, which launched on 29 January 2020, do have replaceable batteries. But some older models, including the Vax Blade 2 Max, don't. Interestingly, the Supervac is one of the few cleaners we have ever tested that the powered brush bar cannot be turned off and runs constantly. We are not great fans of this idea as when it comes to hard floors, particularly easily damaged surfaces such as softwood parquet, there is a danger of damage if small bits of stone or gravel get caught up in the brushes. A cordless product should last just as long as the corded one it's replacing, and a battery that can't be replaced virtually guarantees that it won't.

Even if your battery doesn't completely die, due to the nature of lithium-ion technology, it will still gradually lose charge and you'll notice that your product doesn't last for as long as it used to. According to our annual reliability survey, which asks owners about issues they experienced with products they bought, battery failure accounts for 52% of the reported faults with cordless hedge trimmers and 34% of the faults experienced with cordless vacuum cleaners.

The Supervac has a dual power switch, giving you the option of turbo-charged cleaning on full power or energy-saving cleaning on the low setting. These are all products where we know the battery is one of the leading causes of early failure, and where we know from survey data that you expect a Best Buy to last longer than the battery is likely to. Lithium-ion batteries, the main type of battery used in cordless appliances, gradually lose the ability to hold charge over time. So not being able to replace the battery limits the usable lifetime of your product.

Our reliability survey -we surveyed 7,917 Which? members in September 2019 about the appliances they have at home. We gathered data for more than 25,000 domestic appliances. There’s no need to adjust the cleaning head as you hoover and the motorised brush head passes effortlessly from hard to carpeted surfaces without losing suction and remaining quiet.

That's bad news for you, as you have to shell out for a replacement earlier than expected, and bad news for the environment, too, as it creates needless waste. On the first trial switch on we could see the brush bar spinning and hear something – but not a lot. The 008 is spectacularly quiet and you could probably clean up around a sleeping baby without waking them. At just 72dB that is much, much lower than most mains powered vacuum cleaners and quieter than the majority of cordless ones we have tested too. That sort of noise level is about same as your TV watching daytime programme, so really not intrusive at all. As a result, Which? no longer recommends products that don't have replaceable batteries as Best Buys, regardless of how good they are otherwise.
