About this deal

Barnabus lives in a lab under the Perfect Pets store with the other Failed Projects. He's happy but longs for a life outside his glass jar. When the Green Rubber Suits plan to "recycle" Barnabus and his friends into genetically perfect pets, the animals decide to run for it. During the chase, Barnabus is forced to choose between perfection and freedom. The pictures in this book are magical, and the story emphasizes the importance of following your dreams, trusting your friends, and realizing that you don't have to be perfect to be happy. Barnabus is a hybrid pet half mouse and half elephant, he has been listed as a “Failed Project” and lives in a bell jar in a lab far below the Perfect Pets store, where the successful hybrid pets are sold. Barnabus with other Failed pets plans an escape. And further is the story of there escape from the lab. A] lovely book about grief and imagination… filled with sumptuous illustrations.” - The Wall Street Journal. Barnabus is such an adorable character, and I love that although he's a "failed project" he's happy with being himself and wouldn't want to change. I also think that the message about not judging others comes across really well in this story.

The artwork is the star of this lovely picture book that looks like a Pixar movie already. The premise is that Barnabus and his friends are failed pets in a lab that makes genetically engineered perfect pets for kids. Barnabus dreams of seeing the real world and when they all realize they're about to be destroyed they make a daring escape plan. The second half feels rushed and incomplete. It almost felt like it was just out there to set it up for the series or movie or something that's coming next. I'm in love with the illustrations though, and intrigued to see where the author is going with it. Barnabus is a half mouse, half elephant hybrid who has been deemed a “Failed Project” and lives in a bell jar underneath the Perfect Pets store, where the creatures deemed successful are sold in droves. Barnabus and his fellow Failures (all of whom are adorable and I want them all) plot to escape, wanting to see the outside world. The message of not seeing yourself as a failure, but embracing your strengths is woven throughout the narrative without feeling too heavy, and Baranbus is an easy character to sympathize with. One Amazing Elephant, written by Linda Oatman High (Harper Collins, Feb 2017). Cover art by Terry Fan and Eric Fan.Cover design by Erin Fitzsimmons. Barnabus and his friends are held behind glass, confined to their own space. He dreams of what it would be like to be free, to see the outside world. No one believes it possible, but Barnabus. Absolutely adorable, sweet, and the slightest bit melancholic, a perfect mixture. The art style is amazing–soft, yet vibrant–and the story’s message is excellent. My thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC of “The Barnabus Project”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. The Barnabus Project would definitely make a special gift for someone or a treasured keepsake. Either way I highly recommend this adorable book! Barnabus and his friends in the failed project section of the lab are not perfect and this book is a celebration of being different. The green rubber suits want to recycle the failed projects and turn them into perfect pets but Barnabus and his friends dash to freedom to find a world where they can be accepted for who they are. This is a great message for young readers; they should be proud of who they are and should celebrate their differences. The story is also about realising your hopes and dreams and shows that with resilience and team-work you can achieve anything. The book is perfect for bedtime with a sweet, underlying message about not being perfect being absolutely fine. It also talked about the importance of friendship and working together to help one another out.

I’m in looove! With a mousofant called Barnabus. He and his fellow pets don’t quite meet the criteria for the pets in the Perfect Pets Shop, live in bell jars in the “failed projects” corner of the underground lab, awaiting their “recycling” by the Green Suits. Devin Fan is an artist, poet and youth worker. The Barnabus Project is his first children's book and marks the first time all three brothers have written and illustrated a picture book together. The story has a great message about working together to achieve the impossible, and loving yourself for who you truly are. The illustrations are really beautiful as well. And honestly, how can you really going wrong when the main character is a mouse/elephant hybrid who loves peanuts and cheese?! One reason we love this book is because of the characters. They are mixed-up animals. For example, the main character, Barnabus, is an elephant/mouse. Some are really tiny and all of them are cute! Another cool character is a combination of an owl and a lion! All the characters are brave and determined. The Fan brothers' second picture book, Ocean Meets Sky, centers on the magical spot between sky and sea. The text and illustrations mesh wonderfully to convey the drama of the escape and the critical roles teamwork and friendship play in the animals’ success.”— STARRED REVIEW, Booklist The Barnabus Project begins by letting us know that not all is what it seems. Beneath the Pet Store, underground several stories, is a particular work facility. Here is where we find Barnabus.
