You do this by using one or more white dice to send cubes to the cathedral. For each cube you add to the cathedral, you gain one victory point and one or two influence depending on the value of the dice. Troyes does not give off good first impressions. The art is authentically medieval, but it is distinctly unpleasant to look at. The cover will put off 90% of gamers. The board is also horrible to look at. I know that art is subjective, but the vast majority of people will veer away from this game at high speeds just because of the look. The second type of action you can take is adding workers to buildings. The building locations players selected have one to three dice values associated with them. These dice indicate the number value of the die used to add a worker to that location. For instance, to send a worker to the top space in the yellow building, you would need to spend a 1 or 6 pip yellow die.

The citizens of the city provide a work force, represented by dice. You use the work force in different ways: to perform various activities supervised by your tradesmen, to build the cathedral, to grapple with unfortunate events, or even to recruit new citizens. Each of these actions requires utilization of one group of 1 to 3 dice. The key to the latter (cutthroat) is purchasing dice. One way to create efficiency is to use the maximum number of dice per turn (3). But you’re rarely going to be able to do this with only your own dice, and the cost of purchasing dice goes up if it’s being added to a larger pool. So what this ends up creating is an environment where you will absolutely want to steal dice from under your opponents (giving them a fee, granted) but only when it will really hurt them or help you. It’s not constant warfare so much as measured, tactical strikes at opportune moments. Maybe it’s the iconography, mentioned above. Maybe it’s the unique balance of dice-as-workers-as-dice, or that the point engines aren’t always obvious until Turn 3.

And I’m indifferent on the purple dice, but some players won’t be. It mitigates the sharp cuts of dice stealing somewhat, but without eliminating dice stealing altogether, so it will soften the game slightly. Whether or not this is a good thing will depend on your gaming preferences. The overall feel, however, will remain largely unchanged. Troyes – Conclusions While most of the game’s VPs are scannable on the board, each player will have a secret objective (which applies to all players at game end) that can earn them additional VPs.Each round you will be allocated a number of dice depending on how much presence you have in three buildings. There are three colours of dice and each one leans in a certain direction more than the others – yellow are generally better for earning coins, red for fighting of events and white for rebuilding the Cathedral. In the box there are four different colors of dice, a series of cards, a game board, cardboard punch-out pieces for money and victory points, and player pieces. Honestly, the pieces aren’t remarkable, but they’re perfectly usable. The dice are slightly smaller than average, mostly to have them fit on the player area in the board.

The cubes are removed and the event is available again to receive new cubes in future actions. With the expansion cards, it really does feel entirely unique every time. My favorite element of the game is the hidden end game goals. Each goal defines a different type of strategy that you can follow and which can radically alter the course of your game play. Since you still score all of the other players’ end of game bonuses, there’s also the added element of deciphering what scoring bonuses the other players have. This is an exceptionally cool opportunity for subtle interaction in the game. At the end of the game, the tradesman will yield the VPs indicated on his space. . A single player cannot place 2 tradesmen on the same Activity card.

If possible, verify the text with references provided in the foreign-language article. Unlike the other actions, you always use exactly one die to place a citizen on one of the principal buildings. You take one of your citizens from your personal supply (if you don't have any, you must hire one for 2 Influence points - see Influence) or one of yours already on the board, and place it on the principal building corresponding with the color of the die you have chosen.
