After receiving my 4th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver from Russ, I began to devise a way of installing the sound into the sonic. I drew up plans and notes for the different ways that it might be done but decided on a best, and most efficient way. The Doctor led the final charge at the slopes of the Never Vault, ( PROSE: The Day of the Doctor) and arranged for the Advent of Woe to close. ( PROSE: Twice Upon a Time) He also met the Time Lord Commander from the Gates of Elysium again, now holding the rank of General, at the Hellion Blaze. ( PROSE: The Third Wise Man) In 2020, Big Finish announced a prequel series - The War Doctor Begins - with actor and impressionist Jonathon Carley taking over the title role. The first volume was released in June 2021. This version of the Doctor’s iconic tool isn’t as flashy as the one wielded by Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor but it should still be an essential part of any Whovian’s collection because of how rare it is. Unless Steven Moffat pulls some timey-wimey stuff, we’ve probably seen the last of John Hurt’s War Doctor.

It’s made of spoons, y’know. And unlike certain other models, the design of Thirteen’s yellow sonic doesn’t seem to involve sharp corners or pointy bits that will definitely dig into the skin should anyone carrying it have to suddenly have to flatten themselves on the floor. It also has that tapered end that resembles a Zarbi’s bum, which is undoubtedly a coincidence but not an unpleasing one. Used by Doctors of the Who reboot (post-2005), like David Tennant’s 10th Doctor and Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor, will be on display. Plus, the oldest Doctor’s sonic to still exist! At the start of his life, the War Doctor had a stern and determined face, hazel eyes and messy brown hair following regeneration. Though he started off clean shaven, ( TV: The Night of the Doctor) he let his stubble grow ( COMIC: Ambush) until he grew a full brown Van Dyke beard. ( COMIC: The Lost Dimension) The War Doctor, along with the other twelve incarnations, appears in the 2015 video game Lego Dimensions, voiced using clips of John Hurt's dialogue from his episodes.
