Blooming is also present, but it is less noticeable due to the overall dark picture. As a result of the missing brightness, the panel does not deal well with reflections. Our studio light is of course an extreme example of this. The gamma value shows a deviation of up to 0.14 and is almost beyond the prescribed value of 2.2 over the entire measuring range. The color representation is also quite noticeable as being imprecise.

Despite the comparatively low price rating, you get a well-made 4K TV that delivers an amazingly great picture in terms of color reproduction and can also be used well for extended group evenings. However, the picture quality of this model is limited by its comparatively low contrast.Based on the values we measured, we completely readjusted the LG UQ81. Even though we were not completely satisfied with the final result, we could still get some precision out of the panel. The other entries in the 2023 lineup use basic LCD LED panels and are the most affordable 4K options LG offers. Apart from that, the LG UQ81 features HGiG for displaying HDR High Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) content and offers you the Game Optimizer, which is already known from more expensive devices. That being said, Samsung is dipping its toe into OLED TVs, having launched the Samsung S95B in 2022. Although it's technically what Samsung is calling QD-OLED. Because in this display there's actually a whole new type of OLED technology – one that combines the famous self-emissive properties of OLED with the brightness and color range potential of QLED. OLEDs typically make up a significant proportion of LG’s TV lineup and that remains the case in 2023. There’s no A series being released in the UK in 2023, but otherwise, the lineup looks very similar to last year.

LG B3: The B3 is powered by LG’s less advanced α7 Gen6 AI Processor 4K and misses out on the additional brightness that comes with the evo panels used by the C3 and G3. However, it’s a more affordable entry point into the company’s OLED range and still has four HDMI 2.1 ports, a 120Hz refresh rate panel and support for Dolby Atmos.

Both are South Korean manufacturers that sell televisions globally and have a significant presence in the UK and US – unlike Panasonic or Philips, brands that don't have licenses in North America – with a large install base and a broad range of televisions launched each year. LG showcased its new TV range at CES in January, with the lineup comprising various OLED models, a Mini LED flagship, a few edge-lit Quantum Dot NanoCell alternatives and a handful of basic LCD LED models. LG UR91: Available in five sizes and powered by the sixth-gen α5 AI Processor 4K, the UR91 supports 4K Upscaling, HDR10 and HLG, AI Sound Pro and nine picture modes, but its 50Hz refresh rate means it’s not the best choice for next-gen gamers. It’ll be enough to say that OLED is generally suited to high-quality video formats in dark viewing environments, while Samsung’s sets lag on contrast (comparatively) but make up for it with a bright and impactful display.LG C3 OLED evo: The C series OLED saw new 42in and 48in models added in 2022 and both of those make a return in 2023, along with 55in, 65in, 77in and 83in options. Those smaller sets will be particularly appealing to gamers, though gaming provision is magnificent no matter which size you go for, with four HDMI 2.1 ports that support key gaming features such as ALLM, VRR and 4K@120Hz. However, we are not really convinced by the TV. Although the color reproduction is also on a high level for gaming content, the moderate contrast and the moderate peak brightness are not enough for us to give a real recommendation for a well-rounded gaming experience. HDR: Ultra HD TVs are compatible with high dynamic range formats including HDR 10 for improved colour and more detail in the shadows. This reflects the series the TV belongs to. The higher the number, the more advanced (and expensive) the TV is. Admittedly, the preferred HDR format is only really a concern at the higher end of the price range, but those spending big should think carefully about which services they’re likely to want HDR content on.
