About this deal

Kathy: Our initial vast list of botanicals has been whittled down to six, every one of which has earned its place in the bottle. We’ve created a gin that is smooth enough to be sipped neat and is certified vegan too, so it can be drunk with a clear conscience. Mainly though it’s through not sleeping very much, working every hour and also having an absolutely brilliant team, they not only keep the good ship Brighton Gin afloat but make it (largely!) a joy to work here. We only use certified 100% organic pure wheat spirit – super smooth, and without any of the nasties that can give you a sore and sorry head – which we re-distill with juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed (the first UK commercially grown coriander seed in over 200 years) and milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs and renowned for its kindness to the liver function. In true Brighton Gin tradition, each bottle is filled, waxed and labelled by hand, topped off with our distinctive wax seal, this time in Navy Blue. Brighton Gin is vegan certified, including the waxed bottle tops, and our distillation process also means it’s gluten free. What is navy gin?

But don’t just take our word for it – it won an Outstanding at the IWSC 2022, Gold at the Nordic Spirits Awards 2020, and the Craft Distilling Expo named it their Navy Gin of the Year! At 57% proof, it also holds the juniper flavour better and enhances the botanicals, which means you need less gin in your glass to get that refreshing juniper flavour really pushing through to your taste buds. It was a fun experience, ideal as a gift or for anyone simply interested in learning about the gin-making process. I read an interesting piece about Brighton Gin sometime ago. It was suggested that Milk Thistle (one of the novel botanicals disclosed) was included because the plant itself contains silymarin, a compound reputed to have beneficial effects on the liver. WebMD says the jury’s out, while academic articles seem to indicate there’s some potential there that is being looked at further. The compound itself isn’t soluble in water, but it is soluble in ethanol. Meaning at higher proofs, you’ll get more of it. [solubility is the factor at play when the Ouzo effect/Louche occurs in higher proof spirits, the addition of water causes certain compounds to come out of solution]. Brighton Ginwas born of a passion for gin, and a passion for the place where we live and play - we wanted to create a gin that embodied the spirit of Brighton: unusual, playful and fiercely independent.

Map & Directions

Each bottle is filled, labelled and wax sealed by hand, the distinctive blue/green colour being that of Brighton’s famous seafront railings. Our early distillations were overwhelmingly strong and unbalanced and tasted like loo cleaner! We had a minor fire in the early days that needed to be patted out with my oven gloves, which then started smouldering themselves. My colleague Ellie then had a health and safety fit and rushed out to buy fire blankets and extinguishers! At the beginning we had a vast list of botanicals we wanted to use, but through the process of distilling and tasting them individually we whittled them down to our final recipe. Kathy and Helen worked on the gin in the early mornings and late evenings between their day jobs and soon found that the realities of craft distilling included 8am tasting sessions of still warm gin from the previous night’s distillation! Their distillation licence was granted on 11 June 2014 and they moved into new premises in a single-windowed room under the Urchin pub in Hove.

With gin, additionally, I think there’s so much room within the category, an infinite variety of botanicals and combinations, the different methods you can use. There are several thousand gins worldwide now, but I’m hoping there’s room for everyone. For local deliveries in most areas of postcodes BN1, BN2 and BN3, we can often offer direct to doorstep delivery via Brighton Gin bike or van. Having had great respect for what Kathy and her family and friends have achieved- for many years - it was a brilliant afternoon learning why this tiny team has achieved international award winning status! It’s accessible, approachable, with tons of room for innovation and creativity. Also, fundamentally delicious. I love that our conversations with consumers have evolved – five years ago they were about persuading people to try it neat, now people ask straight away about distillation methods and botanicals. But more romantically, Brighton Gin is distilled in a pub in Brighton. Designed to capture the romance that is quintessentially Brighton, the Milk Thistle, even if it won’t cure/prevent your hangover, is native to the region of England from where it is distilled. #place Tasting NotesThere are enough pubs in Brighton to drink in a different one every day of the year, so this is a place that likes its booze and its partying! Aside from all this, what better way is there to enjoy a Brighton G&T than having it on the beach with some mates in the summer or snuggling up under a blanket with a flask of mulled Brighton Gin in winter? Here at Brighton Gin we run the tours ourselves! The same small team who work in the distillery all week also run the tours on Saturdays, which is just one of the things which make our tours so special! Due to this we can only do distillery tours on a small scale which means that any no-shows or last minute cancellations present a real issue for us.
